Jets fan here, I was shocked after that hit. I'm hoping that Evans is okay, he was responsive and moving his arms which is good. I originally heard it was a 2 game suspension for ol' Mark but 4 games is fair.

The hit was about as dirty a hit as I've ever seen; But whoever the guy was who was holding back the dogpile just made me feel human again 🥺.

Side note: If your teammate gets knocked out and isn't moving at all several seconds later, you are a terrible teammate and an idiot if you start a fight standing right next to his unconscious body. You know what's worse than getting brutally knocked out? Getting your carotid artery severed because your own teammate decided that 5 feet away from your unconscious face was as good a place as any to start pushing and shoving people who are all standing on razor sharp, double edged steel blades. Which happen to be pretty difficult to keep your balance on when you're being repeatedly shoved by a 6'4" defenseman who weighs like 220 pounds, it turns out. Who'da thunk?

Ive seen Scott Stevens throw down harder hits. IMO he stops skating at the hash marks, indicating 2 things. 1 he gives up on the play and not trying to prevent the goal. He could have dove attempting to knock the puck away or the net off simultaneously. 2 because he stops skating he is not going full speed, but still going quite fast enough to deliver the damage he did.
In that instance he knew wanted to deliver the hit instead of trying to prevent a goal. I don't believe Sheifele thought his hit was gonna be as devastating based on his facial expressions after. Nonetheless he chose delivering a hit over preventing a goal, which is goon hockey IMO

Exactly what I saw. Too many of my friends were saying "oh so he's supposed to just let him score the empty net?" Running him after it's in the net doesn't do anything to stop the goal. Scheifele made the decision to not play the puck near the blue line. I don't think he had intent to injure, but he definitely wanted to rock the guy. If he just reached with his stick instead, there was a good chance he could have knocked the puck away.

Scheifele would have had a better chance of stopping the goal if he had tried to play the puck or block the net with his stick... it also would have been the sportsmanlike/respectful play. Instead he decided to just plow into the defenceless Evans.

Meanwhile, if you wanted to prevent a goal stretching out his stick, maybe diving even, and giving up his own body to prevent the insurance goal would have been the move to make. If you just want to kill a guy, skate in at full speed elbow up, which is what he did, knowing that the guy's going to score the clincher. I love big hits. I still say it was dirty but I'll watch again. Neither the puck nor the goal line are going to move off the ice four feet though.

The long story short and hard truth here is: it wasn’t an illegal hit. He was penalized because it was so shocking and because of the result of the play - not because of the cause. Had Evans hopped back up they would’nt have even ejected Scheifele so much as suspend him. How do I know? Happens every season. Dozens of times.

In hockey you are taught to always keep your head up. Had Evans done that, he wouldn’t have been laid out.

These guys know what game they are playing and if you think you shouldn’t take the man in that play w 1:00 left in a one goal game then you do not know what you are saying. That kid tucked his shoulder tight to the post bc he knew it was a bold play and would likely get clobbered. This is hockey buddy. If you wanna watch guys flop around and not get touched then go watch soccer. It’s unfortunate that he was hurt but he didn’t have to try and score that goal. He took a chance. Well done by Ehlers to protect Evans. In any other major professional contact sport (Rugby or American football), a hit like Scheifele's on Evans would result in a major fine and long suspension, let's hope the NHL does the same in this case. This kind of reckless and dangerous hit is unnecessary, endangers the players and their careers as well as undermining the quality of the game itself. The NHL is better than this crap!

Ehlers is a good guy. But it was a dirty hit by Jets center--he wasn't trying to prevent the goal he knew he was late and he came with an elbow up to Evan's head. News is he is suspended for 4 games but he deserves that to be "the playoffs" and next year's pre-season, too. I love hitting. I hate cheap shots.

@Ryan I grew up watching hockey in the 70's and 80's so I love a hard hitting game and a fight on occasion. I just think the timing of the hit and being that there was no way to keep the puck out of the net made the hit unnecessary. You are right though about the game being sissified. All sports and society in general have headed that direction.

@Gens Colberg I tend to believe every actual NHL player saying it was a clean hit but believe what you want. Game is becoming sissified to appease Americans and pretty soon there won't be hitting or fighting allowed, sad really.

Looked like a clean hit, evans positioning and posture made the hit very hard, his weight was all to on one side which caused him to rag doll, mark scheifele definitely looked liked instant regret, he didn't intend the outcome to be that, speedy recovery to evans and good on Ehelers quickly reacting to the players welfare, im sure all parties know it was an unintentional big hit.

@Empyrean well the nhl usually doesnt do much when it comes to these types of hits and he got awarded 4 games of suspension ! The jets are getting their asses handed to them anyways 😂

Personally I think He could have saved the goal and made the hit as well. Potentially giving Winnipeg another opportunity to tie the game. But instead was focused on the body....which is not really the wrong thing to do. But on a wrap around goal like that I honestly think he could have jammed the puck up..looked like he had time and was a very predictable play at that particular moment.

Summary: t'was a bit dirty, yup!

@D C The checker propelled himself with upward inertia towards the head region of his opponent resulting in what could be interpreted as a jump and thus a charging penalty and a very much deserved 4 game suspension. Evidently the NHL agrees with me and maybe you should go back the 70s where that was allowed still

I think this is a situation where both players need to take responsibility for what happened. Evans needs to have his head up around the net. And Schiefele either needs to make an effort to play the puck or let up on that hit significantly. Having said that, Schiefele, despite his reputation as a clean player, needs to be suspended for this.

Clean hit, no charging.. just unfortunate that Evans was hurt. It's too bad that hockey fans "these days" will not understand this but much worse has happened in the past. The hockey fans mirror today's society of limp leftists... quite a shame to ruin the sport.

It's a clean legitimate hit, you can clearly see that the puck got in the goal at exactly the same moment they made contact with only one point difference and almost a full minute left to the timer. Claiming the check was useless at that point in the game is just grossly misinformed. The whole sequence played out in much less than a second, making it impossible to evaluate the situation and change the course of action. The impact was inevitable since Scheifele was already moving at a high rate of speed and was only 2m away from the goal when Evans decided to make a tight turn, barely a tiny fraction of a second passed between the moment Evans decided to turn and the impact. Scheifele braced for the impact instinctively by raising his shoulder like he was trained to do and it turns out that bracing for an impact to avoid causing damage to yourself is incidentally how you check people, making it impossible to discern between a person checking another and a person colliding with someone without intent. To the simple minded and emotional hockey fan, this looks like aggression, luckily for all of us, most hockey fans don't vote and will never serve on a jury.

This entire ordeal is just further proof that the masses act like animals and that we need to do way more to protect individuals and their rights against the tyranny of smooth-brained sports fans and other communitarianist trash who believe their claims are legitimate only because other idiots make the same claims.

Of all the plays we’ve seen, this really wasn’t that bad. If this was the middle of a tie game in ot and in open ice, no one would be batting an eye. It obviously sucks that Evan’s got hurt. You never want to see that.

Mad Props to Ehlers for realizing the situation and helping protecting a down fellow player.
Mark Scheifele on the other hand.... made a poor choice and most liking will pay for it.
He was full speed, squaring up for the hit at the hash marks, zero attempt at a poke check to try and save the goal, finished the check high to a guy he knows that is going to wrap it in.
Hope for Jake Evans to have a speedy recovery.
Also food for thought, if Shea Weber hits Mark Scheifele on a play like that. Career ending and Maurice would be calling the RCMP and not calling it a 'Heavy, heavy hit for sure, but it was clean'

Give that Ehlers guy the Masterton trophy. Now. This hit was absolutely unnecessary. You don't hit a guy full speed on an open net goal. I know that it's the series and all that, but this was a career ending hit. When you make a wrap around alone with nobody around you, you don't expect a train to hit you at this speed. They have to draw a line somewhere.
