No Doubling Back
Jason Mraz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been nice to hold your hand
As we shifted through this twisted abandon
I would like to think that you will know your way
We have dodged the ropes of rain
Well the cats and dogs well they love to play
On the handsome fella with umbrella
Who once saved you your day
And I will ask you to open my door from your side
From the inside after you drive
Because I wanna stay wet for a little bit longer
That's why

I warm the engine compartment up
While I stand here and think it up
But it's a little too early to bury the worries
Til this wish is my command

And I wonder, wonder which one of us
Is gonna state the obvious
And I wonder if you already know
That I gotta let you go

I know this ain't the way I planned it
I guess I ain't the great romantic
And I'm not doubling back now
No doubling back
Doubling back now

Well before I catch you complaining that it hardly rains at all
Let me stop to lock the top
For fear of it falling hard
By the eyes were ears and the arms are
Scars of where the war was waged on words that we heard as a joke
How did it drown our love

Oh lord
When it rains it's sure to pour
But when I look in your eyes
I fear I won't see surprise
That I'm not doubling back cause
I wonder, wonder which one of us
Is gonna state the obvious
And then I wonder if you already know
That I gotta let you go

I know this ain't the way I planned it
I guess I ain't the great romantic
And I'm not doubling back now
No doubling back now
Doubling back now
No doubling back now
Doubling back now
No doubling back now
Doubling back now
No doubling back now
Doubling back now
No doubling back now
Doubling back now
No doubling back now
No turning around now

No going back now
No

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Jason Mraz's song "No Doubling Back" narrate the story of a man and a woman who are going through the struggle of ending their relationship. At the beginning of the song, the singer expresses the hope that his partner will find her way as they go through this twisted abandonment together. He reminisces the moment when he saved her day by offering her an umbrella during a heavy rainstorm. However, as the song progresses, the singer confronts the reality of their impending breakup. He wonders which one of them will state the obvious and accept that they must let go of each other. He admits that he hasn't been the great romantic he planned to be, but he is not prepared to double back now.

The song's lyrics also use figurative language to highlight the dissonance in the relationship. The rain, for instance, symbolizes the challenges they have faced, and by locking the car's top, they avoid the hard and painful moments that await them. The scars on their ears, eyes, and arms are the wounds inflicted on them by the words they exchanged. They were once jokes, but now they threaten to drown their love. The singer's reluctance to leave his partner is evident when he asks her to open his door from the inside after she has driven him because he wants to stay wet for a little bit longer.

something, something

I hope, one day, he'll release a studio version of this awsome song😊

Yeah, I agree. I was first exposed to Mraz on the radio waves, through some pretty Pop-ish treatment with his songs. And even back then, he stood out. But this guy is in a totally different league live. It's a genuine "experience" by itself.

energy4life623

agreed. more people need to listen to this special person's messages and acknowledge the joy he gives through his talents

i love the whole band thing he does, but if he would ever decide to settle on only small acoustic shows with toca, maybe 3-400 people, i wouldn't be opposed lol, i love his ability to flat out improvise on the spot, not just lyrics, but to put a spin on the vocal melody too, something fresh and new =)! started listening to him in the late 90's, and don't think i'll EVER stop... the man is a true inspiration!

BloodyVostok

this is one of those rare moments you see Jason Mraz without his signature acoustic guitar <3

TayP

agreed, I hate it when people call him a pop artist. He's so much more. Like you said, you can't really describe his music with a genre. The best thing I can up with is its real, true music with substance. He's one of those people that really feel and enjoy music.

bleeddam

Es un artista completo con talento, humanidad y sobre todo un corazón inigualable....

DavidKarban

TharoomMan

3:20 pure skill. LOVE it. Should be a whole song with that as a hook.

reuscmar

Yes, yes, he does! Saw him in september in Zurich. It was truly amazing. It felt like spending a few hours in the sun or somewhere...I expected to come out to a bright sun and a nice beach after the show! :-)
