When a teenage Reeves encountered the works of Bob Dylan and James Taylor, it set off a chain of events. First he began working on his own songwriting, combining the classic singer/songwriter style with more modern influences like Radiohead and Sufjan Stevens. He then dropped out of college and moved from Iowa, where he then lived, eventually landing in California. The second person he met upon arrival was future pop star Colbie Caillat. The two hit it off immediately and it didn't take long for their friendship to turn into a songwriting partnership, one that would create the foundation for Caillat's hit album Coco. The songs that weren't reserved for Coco ended up on Reeves' EP Hearts Are Magnets, which appeared in 2006 on the Dancing Squirrel label. The full-length The Magnificent Adventures of Heartache followed in 2007.
Reeves signed to Warner Bros Records in 2008 with the help of Kara DioGuardi and released an album and an EP with the label. He again self-released an album in 2011 with The Lovesick.

You're everything that I ever wanted
And this kind of thing
Doesn't just come around every time you go looking for it
I don't wanna be just friends
No, I'll never fake it or pretend
And I don't want another girl
I don't wanna be just friends
It's something I can't understand
I don't wanna be just friends
Not now not ever
Those two words are bullets in my chest
Just friends
Hey, what did you think I'd do
It felt so good waking up beside you
The way you kiss
So deadly and it doesn't come around
And I'm always gonna miss it
I don't wanna be just friends
No I'll never fake it or pretend
And I don't want another girl
Cos you're the only one that I love
I don't wanna be just friends
It's something I can't understand
I don't wanna be just friends
Not now not ever
Those two words are bullets in my chest
Just friends
Those two words are bullets in my chest
Just friends
And it's never gonna be the same again
My love
It's never gonna be the same again
Be just friends
Just friends
Just friends
Don't wanna be
Just friends
Just friends
Never gonna be the same again
I don't wanna be just friends ooh
I don't wanna be just friend
Not not
I don't wanna be just friend not
Those two words are bullets in m chest
Bullets in my chest
Bullets in my chest
Just friends
The lyrics of Jason Reeves's song 'Just Friends' revolve around a guy who loves a girl but she only wants to be friends. He expresses his feelings for her, saying that she is everything he ever wanted, and he would never pretend to be just friends with her. He cannot understand why she doesn't want to be with him because he feels such a strong connection with her that he could never be just friends. He tries to convince the girl that he loves her and claims that the two words 'just friends' are like bullets in his chest, causing him pain.
The song is an emotional outpour of frustration and sadness at the prospect of not being able to be with the one he loves. The lyrics capture the feeling of being trapped in the friendzone, where the person you love sees only friendship and nothing more. Despite his efforts to try and win her over, he knows it's never going to be the same again. The song ends with the guy still pining for the girl and expressing his desire not to be just friends with her, hoping against hope that she will understand his feelings and reciprocate them.
