Foster started her own label – now called Fosterchild Records - in 2003. Her debut release, Everybody’s Girl, garnered national radio success at the Triple A format, as well as positive reviews, praising her no-frills, unfiltered lyrics. Songwriting awards followed and she has also secured some impressive Film/TV placements, with songs placed in the popular television soap opera All My Children as well as a recent placement in an American Pie movie sequel.
The title track of Foster’s 2006 sophomore CD, The Underdogs, won “Song of the Year” at the Out Music Awards. Foster grew up in a very conservative, Houston, TX, suburb.
Foster credits another outsider, Ani DiFranco, for inspiration in her business model. “Ani did it her way, and she inspired me to do it my way. I’ve created a fairly unique situation. I’ve built a team of people I trust at my label and also, a community of fans,” Foster proudly notes. “It’s always challenging to take off the artist hat and put on the business hat, but it’s a challenge I embrace. My music means too much to me to blindly put it in someone else’s hands.”
Foster’s new album, "Thirty-Nine," was slated for a 2009 release, and a four-song EP, "Songs From Thirty-Nine," is currently available. The video for the single "Closer To Nowhere" recently reached #1 on the LOGO Channel (MTV Network) charts.

Saturn

c'mon, take my hand
A surprise is awaiting you
We'll sprawl out on the sand
And unwind by the light of the moon
Forget your father's face
Forget the debts you have to pay
Let's get away, yeah
We could fly out of this place
And out into space where Saturn awaits us
We could fly straight through the sky, way over county lines
Where Saturn's a state of mind
C'mon, let's take a trip
We can lay on my big brass bed, yeah
We don't need no rocketship to get there
These rings around my heart, you see, are where we'll find the mystery
We could fly out of this place
And out into space where Saturn awaits us
We could fly straight through the sky, way over county lines
'Cause Saturn's a state of mind
Forget about the fear inside you
Look at all the stars to guide you
All the planets are aligned
When Saturn is your state of mind
C'mon, let's take a trip
We don't need no rocketship...
We could fly out of this place
And out into space where Saturn awaits us
We could fly straight through the sky, way over county lines
The starting lines of Jen Foster's song Saturn convey a message of escapism and freedom. The lyric invites the listener on an adventure away from their monotonous life. The mention of taking the hand and sprawling on sand entails the idea of companionship and relaxation. The discontentment with mundane life is further exemplified by forgetting the father's face and debts. The last line of this stanza urges to leave everything behind and escape to better things.
Saturn in the next stanza is used as a metaphor that denotes a place of comfort, rhapsody, and excitement. The line 'Saturn awaits us' is a reference to the feeling of finally discovering a place of contentment. The mention of flying straight through the sky and county lines indicates a sense of liberation and the feeling of being unbound from societal constraints. The 'state of mind' referring to Saturn further indicates that it's a figurative place than a tangible one.
The chorus of the song calls for abandoning one's fears and looking up to the stars that will lead us to our destination. Saturn is portrayed as a place where the planets align and everything falls into place. It is a state of being that feels like perfection- the conclusion of finding an idyllic life. The song Saturn is a reflective and optimistic song that encourages the listener to embrace change, leave behind their anxiety and strive towards a state of mind where everything feels right.
