1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.
Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"

Don't let it make you sad and blue
Don't let love hang you up
'Cause it won't be long
(Won't be long)
Said it won't be long
(Won't be long)
Before your life is good
Walking around in a world of rage
Somebody just stole your sunshine away
And I know the last thing that you wanna hear from me
Some old dilapidated jive philosophy
But oh, get yourself together
Stop complaining about the weather, hey
And don't let life hang you up
Don't let it make you sad and blue
I said, don't let life hang you up
'Cause it won't be long, well, it won't be long
I know how it feels when your love's gone wrong
You're long faced and lonely but you must be strong
Go out and get yourself all lost in the crowd
Sigh a little, cry a little but for crying out loud
Don't be around looking for sympathy
You won't be able to see the forest for the trees, if you
Don't let life hang you up
I said, don't let it make you sad and blue
Brother, don't let love hang you up
'Cause it won't be long, I said it won't be long
Before your life is
Don't let love hang you up
I said don't let it make you sad and blue
Listen to me, don't let love hang you up
'Cause it won't be long before your life is
Don't let love hang you up
Don't let it make you sad and blue
Don't let love hang you up
The lyrics of Jerry Butler's song "Don't Let Love Hang You Up" advocate for resilience and positivism. The song warns against allowing negative emotions to take hold while reminding listeners that things always get better. Butler addresses heartbreak and coping with loneliness, seeking to motivate his audience to persevere despite their struggles. The line "stop complaining about the weather" suggests that it's pointless to dwell on things outside of one's control, like the weather or a broken heart. Instead, people should actively seek solace and community, even if it means getting lost in a crowd for a while.
The repetition of the opening line serves as an important reminder throughout the song, reinforcing the central message and reminding listeners not to dwell on their pain. The statement "some old dilapidated jive philosophy" in the second verse suggests that this song is not new ground for Butler, as he's been addressing these kinds of themes in his music for a long time. Ultimately, "Don't Let Love Hang You Up" is a reassuring call to action that inspires listeners to keep going and not give in to despair.

So wondering if this might have influenced Paul Simon’s “Gone At Last” featuring Phoebe Snow…Such a great similar sounding Gospel feeling to both!
