1) Jerry Butler, Jr. (born December 8, 1939 in Sunflower, Mississippi) is an American soul singer also known as "The Ice Man" because of his cool demeanour while singing often intensely emotional lyrics.
Butler was dubbed the "Iceman" by a Philadelphia disc jockey while performing in a Philadelphia theater. However, Butler achieved what eluded many earlier Doo Wop groups during the 1950s and 1960s — longevity. Butler’s solo career had a string of hits, including "He Will Break Your Heart," "Moon River," "Make It Easy On Yourself," "Let It Be Me" (the Everly Brothers classic re-done as a duet with Betty Everett), "Brand New Me," "Ain’t Understanding Mellow," (duet with Brenda Lee Eager), and "Never Gonna Give You Up," followed by two hugely successful albums The Iceman Cometh in 1968 and Ice On Ice in 1970. The Iceman Cometh garnered Butler three Grammy nominations. Jerry Butler further made recordings for Philadelphia International Records in the 80's. His most noted song for the label was "Cooling Out"

How can I tell if he loves me so
(is it in his eyes) Oh no, you'll be deceived
(is it in his eyes) Oh no, he'll make believe
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is, oh yeah)
(in his one embrace) Oh no, that's just his arm
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh oh, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh oh oh, kiss him and squeeze him tight
And find out what you want to know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss
(how 'bout the way he acts) Oh no, that's not the way
And you're not listenin' to all I say
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh yeah, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Whoa oh oh, kiss him and squeeze him tight
And find out what you want to know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss
(how 'bout the way he acts) Oh no, that's not the way
And you're not listenin' to all I say
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh yeah, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
Oh oh, it's in his kiss (that's where it is)
The lyrics to Jerry Butler & The Impressions's song "It's In His Kiss" explore the uncertainty and confusion that comes with trying to determine if someone truly loves you. The singer questions how to discern if a person loves them and seeks clues in the way they behave and express themselves. The repeated refrain emphasizes that the answer lies in the person's kiss, a physical act that holds an emotional truth.
The opening lines express the singer's desire to know if their partner loves them. They wonder how they can accurately gauge someone's feelings for them. The subsequent lines dismiss common indicators such as looking into their eyes or observing their facial expressions, suggesting that these can be misleading. The song then highlights the importance of the kiss in revealing the truth. The singer urges to kiss him and hold him tightly, asserting that in that moment, the answer to their question will become clear.
The lyrics challenge the idea that one can determine love through someone's actions alone. The singer suggests that love cannot be deduced from the way someone behaves or presents themselves. Instead, they assert that it is the culmination of all these elements, expressed through the physical act of the kiss, that truly reveals if love exists.
Overall, "It's In His Kiss" conveys the theme of seeking reassurance and understanding in a romantic relationship, and suggests that actions can speak louder than words when it comes to love.
