Growing up in a home where Nina Simone, The Doors and Marianne Faithfull were given a lot of “air play”, Jess was exposed to a wide variety of music from an early age. Her musical influences include Nelly Furtado, Coldplay, Janis Ian and jazz great Nancy Wilson. Jess began studying piano at age 5 followed by the clarinet, trumpet and baritone horn; this, along with harmonizing a cappella with one of her sisters to pop songs on the radio, created a strong base from which Jess developed as an artist.
It’s clear from her music and her presence both on and off stage that Jess King is a young woman full of hope, strength, sensitivity, and conviction. Although the distinctiveness and depth of her voice allow her to transcend genres, Jess stays within the wide boundaries of pop music, while pushing the edges.
Live performance has led Jess King from her home city of New York to other major cities including Tokyo, Hong Kong, London, Paris and San Francisco. She has composed for an award-winning independent film, been featured in several television and print ad campaigns, and has been applauded by music legend Stevie Wonder.
Currently based between New York and Paris, Jess King released her debut single, "User", on July 9, 2013. Get ready to feel something real. EP Coming this autumn.
Some People
Jess King Lyrics

Some people like to surprise
Some people like to leave it all behind
I couldn't tell you why
But you can't see the light you took away
I can't seem to be the person whom you wanna say
Hey I really need need ya
Are you doing fine
But there's cause to regret
But you can't seem to want more than the idea of me
Is this how you live so dangerously
Our time is up now
Did you want me back
Or just lose your sanity
But hey I don't really need ya
I don't care if you're doing fine
Won't spend my weekend in the memories
As I'm one to leave it all behind
But loving you is a fantasy
Just a mirage not something I wanna keep
Our time is up now
So I'll just set you free
Some people don't ever disappoint
People surprise you from time to time
I don't regret leaving you behind
I could tell you the story why
The lyrics of Jess King's song "Some People" explore the complexities and varied emotions involved in relationships. The opening lines "Some people like to disappoint, some people like to surprise, some people like to leave it all behind, I couldn't tell you why" suggest that people's behavior in relationships can be unpredictable and sometimes difficult to understand. The singer expresses a sense of frustration and confusion in trying to comprehend why certain individuals choose to act in certain ways.
The chorus "But you can't see the light you took away, I can't seem to be the person whom you wanna say, hey I really need need ya, are you doing fine" reflects the singer's realization that their partner may not fully appreciate the consequences of their actions. The imagery of "the light you took away" implies that the partner's actions have caused a loss or darkness in the singer's life. Despite this, the singer remains distant and indifferent, stating "hey I don't really need ya, I don't care if you're doing fine." It suggests a desire to move on from this relationship and not dwell on the memories or emotions associated with it.
Towards the end of the song, the lyrics convey a sense of liberation and self-empowerment with lines like "I don't regret leaving you behind, I could tell you the story why." This indicates that the singer has moved on and is content with their decision to leave the relationship behind. The final lines "Some people don't ever disappoint, people surprise you from time to time" suggest that while some relationships may bring disappointment, there are also instances where people can pleasantly surprise us.
Overall, the lyrics of "Some People" depict the complexities of relationships, the difficulties in understanding others' behavior, and the importance of self-worth and empowerment in moving past unfulfilling connections.
