Sometimes at Night
Jessica Lea Mayfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I broke the little cabana boy's heart
To let you fondle me in the dark
One of those seedy outdoor motels
In your bed swore I never would tell

I waited for the sun but it never came out
Now I'll never know what the fuss was about
To watch it set over this mess that used to be a town
You're the last one I thought I'd have my arms around

Sometimes at night
Our bodies collide
And I forget who I'm
Laying next to

I did not ask to be born with these eyes
Eyes that always speak for my mind
I thought I would come home alone
But I brought all your habits into my home

Sometimes at night
Our bodies collide
And I forget who I'm

Laying next to
Laying next to

Overall Meaning

In the first verse of Jessica Lea Mayfield's song Sometimes at Night, the singer confesses to breaking the heart of the "little cabana boy" to engage in a secretive sexual encounter with a lover in a seedy outdoor motel. This decision weighs heavily on her conscience as she swears never to tell anyone about it. The guilt from this action is compounded by the fact that the singer was hoping to spot the sun rising the next morning but never did. She is unclear about the purpose of the night's events and is left with nothing but confusion and regret. This sense of confusion is further highlighted in the chorus, where she states that sometimes at night when their bodies collide, she forgets who she is laying next to, suggesting a lack of clarity around the relationship.

In the second verse, Mayfield reflects on her own inability to hide her thoughts and emotions, lamenting that she was born with "eyes that always speak for my mind." This sense of inadequacy and vulnerability is further amplified as she realizes that despite her initial intention of coming home alone, she has instead carried her lover's habits with her, finding it challenging to disentangle herself from the relationship.

Overall, the song delves into the complexity of human emotions, particularly around the theme of guilt, confusion, and regret. The singer's struggles with self-identity and finding her place in the world are central to the narrative. The chorus is particularly poignant, highlighting the sense of abandonment felt when physical intimacy is not accompanied by emotional connection.

This song is awesome on " Tell Me" ; a little pitchy here .

I think maybe the pitchy works for this song considering what the story involves. I think it's a very accurate rendering of what that sort of experience is like. It's realism in art instead of classicism. Of course record companies don't have that sort of culture, but I feel like this lady is a lot smarter than any of us realize.
