Chances
Jill Barber Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The chances that I'd find you
Stealing glances, across a crowded room
And taking a chance or two
Love it has a funny way of knowing what to do
Oh, but the chances what are the chances
The chances that I'd find you
Old romances, I've had a few
But none like this before
The circumstances, that brought me to you
Are they just chances and nothing more
Love it has a funny way of showing what is true
Oh, but the chances what are the chances that I'd find you
(Love it has a funny way of knowing what to do)
Oh, but the chances what are the chances
The chances that I'd find you.
Jill Barber's song "Chances" is a sweet and romantic ballad that explores the idea of finding love unexpectedly. The lyrics describe the unlikely circumstances that led the singer to meet the person she's fallen in love with. She reflects on her past romances and acknowledges that none of them were like the one she's currently experiencing. The song suggests that love works in mysterious ways and that some things are simply meant to be.
The opening lines, "Chances, what are the chances? The chances that I'd find you", set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is amazed by the sheer fortuity that brought her to her lover. She watched him from afar, "stealing glances across a crowded room," and took "a chance or two" to get closer to him. The chorus repeats the opening lines, emphasizing the idea of fate and the significance of this chance encounter.
The second verse acknowledges the singer's past relationships and contrasts them with the one she's currently experiencing. Although she's had "old romances," none of them were like this. The bridge further emphasizes the idea that love works in mysterious ways, and that even when we're not looking for it, it can find us. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, bringing back the theme of chance and fate.
Overall, "Chances" is a lovely song that captures the essence of falling in love unexpectedly. The lyrics are heartfelt, and the melodies are sweet and soothing. The song is a reminder that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we don't plan for, and that love is often one of these things.

Damn, I wish more artists would make more music like this. I'm primarily a Chevy kind of guy... but I have to tip my hat off to Dodge for making that one commercial that introduced me to Jill's music in the first place!
