Change of Heart
Jim Brickman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel that I'm at a crossroads
I don't know which way to go
You say that I am changing
Into someone that you don't know
Who I am and who I'll be
Is locked inside, inside of me

And if I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend
If we break apart?
How do I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

For years you have been my bestfriend
I thought that would always be
You know that I just can't pretend
It's written all over me
'Cuz where I'll go
And what I'll do, I just can't see
My life without you

If I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend
If we break apart?
How do I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

Moving on is gonna take some time
When I'm gone, you might have
A change of mind
Gotta take the chance,
No matter what I find.

No matter how far I travel
I think of you as home
Its not about finding someone else,
Its all about being alone
Because who I am and who I'll be
Is locked inside, inside of me
'Cuz if I follow my heart
Will you still be my friend,
If we break apart?
How will I make, how will you take
My change of heart?

How will you take
My change of heart?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jim Brickman's song Change of Heart depicts the dilemma of making a life-changing decision and the fear of losing a best friend in the process. The singer is at a crossroads and doesn't know which path to follow. The person they have been closest to for years is afraid of the change they see in them, unable to accept the possibility of the singer becoming someone they do not know. The singer questions whether their friend will still support and accept them when they follow their heart and make a change that may affect their relationship.

The singer expresses their difficulty in accepting the possibility of losing their best friend. They thought their friendship was immutable and would last forever, but they realize that their friend might not accept the change in their life. They don't know what they'll do or where they'll go, and they cannot imagine life without their best friend. But they also acknowledge that moving forward with their lives is essential, even if it means risking their closest relationship.

Taken as a whole, the lyrics of the song speak to a universal human experience of change, growth, and confronting the fear of losing something precious. Figuring out who you are and who you want to be is a challenging process, yet it's essential to personal fulfillment. Sometimes accepting the call to follow our hearts means that we may have to let go of those closest to us in ways we never anticipated. This song echoes the struggle of navigating these significant life decisions.

"I first got to know Mr. Jim Brickman back in 2007 through the concert 'My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman', where he performed alongside Mrs. Olivia Newton-John. I immediately fell in love with his music and have been a fan ever since. Mrs. ONJ is one of my favorite female singers of all time. I had the pleasure of meeting her in my shop when she visited me and met my daughter, Olivia. Despite being a huge superstar, Mrs. ONJ was very humble and down-to-earth. One day, when I told her neighbor how much I loved her music and that I named my daughter after her, she surprised me by visiting my shop the very next day. She asked to meet my daughter in person and gave her an autograph. It was such a kind gesture from one of the biggest stars on earth. Mrs. ONJ is truly one of a kind. I also want to express my appreciation to Mr. Brickman for his wonderful music. Thank you so much!"

In the mid 70's I heard Olivia and was instantly hooked on her voice and looks and in love, my sister's gave me a hard time about it and teased me but I didn't care I was and still in love with her. A boyhood crush that lives on today many, many years later
Thank you Olivia

The first time I heard this song when I was in High School. Now, I am 65 years old, from Indonesia, I still trully enjoy this song. Perfect combination between the nice voice & the nice piano.

@jimmypendon1818

How come you're 65 now. Highschool means 15 or 16 years old.. this song was come out on 2000'' then if ur 15 in time this song comes out then I supposed to have age of 25 + 21= 36 year ..so ur age must be 36 not over 60
