Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Brickman enrolled in the Cleveland Institute of Music taking courses in composition and performance, while taking business classes at Case Western Reserve University. His music career started when he was nineteen, when Jim Henson hired him to write tunes for Sesame Street. He was also hired to write commercial jingles while in college.
Brickman writes a wide variety of music. Besides his piano compositions and love songs, he has also created arrangements of other songs. Several of his albums feature arrangements of children's music; he has produced two Christmas-themed albums The Gift (1997) and Peace (2003); and his 2005 album Grace concentrates on arrangements of well-known Christian music.
Jim Brickman has also starred in the now-on-DVD PBS specials "My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman", "Love Songs & Lullabies" and "The Disney Songbook." In 2006, he sponsored his first Jim Brickman Valentine's Day Cruise with Carnival Cruise Lines which has become an annual event.

My favorite song of all times, Jim Brickman is my favorite artist also. Who couldn't absolutely love this song, it talks about everything wonderful in life: Snow, children, lights, fairytales, fireplace, and someone special that you prayed for and was given. After meeting as children, and with many common friends, we never met again until 40 years later. That was in 2014. I have retired from a military career and moved back to our hometown. She was 7 years younger than me. While in a grocery store check out line, we started a casual conversation. One question led to another, and suddenly we realized we met years ago. Her mother and my aunt were best friends and that's where we had met briefly as kids. She was about 6 and I was 12 or 13. Her bother was on my baseball team. My father worked for her grandparents on their farm. We suddenly realized we had three generations of connections and knew a huge number of people in common, but never had met again until that day, and 10 years after I returned to the area. She lived 3 miles from me and drove by my house every day. It was instant sparks, immediate attraction, Twin Flames, and soul mates like a bolt of lightening. I've always been a Jim Brickman fan and I introduced her to his music. This song was our special song and we love to play it often. Especially rededicating it to each other during the Christmas holiday. She passed away suddenly last year, and my heart still breaks, but this song captures the essence of our love for each other and how important it is to take the chance and find love.
