Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Brickman enrolled in the Cleveland Institute of Music taking courses in composition and performance, while taking business classes at Case Western Reserve University. His music career started when he was nineteen, when Jim Henson hired him to write tunes for Sesame Street. He was also hired to write commercial jingles while in college.
Brickman writes a wide variety of music. Besides his piano compositions and love songs, he has also created arrangements of other songs. Several of his albums feature arrangements of children's music; he has produced two Christmas-themed albums The Gift (1997) and Peace (2003); and his 2005 album Grace concentrates on arrangements of well-known Christian music.
Jim Brickman has also starred in the now-on-DVD PBS specials "My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman", "Love Songs & Lullabies" and "The Disney Songbook." In 2006, he sponsored his first Jim Brickman Valentine's Day Cruise with Carnival Cruise Lines which has become an annual event.

Someone shoots a gun in the midnight air
And I don't know why
Somebody lives, somebody dies
Somebody wrongs and a mother cries
And I don't know why
Other things you change if you can
Peace, you'll find it where the heart is
And the heart is right where love lives
And love can always find a way
Hope is the something that reminds us
It's not too late to find us
One day we may be in peace
Haven't spoken in thirty years
After angry words and bitter tears
And I don't know why
Best of brothers and best of friends
One mistake and their story ends
And I don't know why
Some things we'll never understand
Other things you change if you can
Peace, you'll find it where the heart is
And the heart is right where love lives
And love can always find a way
Hope is the something that reminds us
It's not too late to find us
One day we may be in peace
It's all about forgiveness
With God as my witness
I wanna live to see peace
Peace, you'll find it where the heart is
And the heart is right where love lives
And love can always find a way
Hope is the something that reminds us
It's not too late to find us
One day we may be in peace
The song "Peace" by Jim Brickman is a reflection on the complex nature of life and the search for peace amidst conflict and turmoil. The lyrics open with the sound of a gunshot in the night, which serves as a metaphor for the unexpected and uncontrollable events that often disrupt our lives. The singer expresses confusion and frustration at the senseless violence and suffering that he sees around him, noting that some things are simply beyond our understanding.
As the song continues, the focus shifts to more personal conflicts, such as the estrangement of two brothers who haven't spoken in thirty years. The singer acknowledges that mistakes are often the cause of such ruptures in relationships, but still wonders why they have to be so permanent. Despite this, there is a sense of hopefulness that runs throughout the song, as the singer suggests that forgiveness is key to finding peace. He also acknowledges the transformative power of love, reminding us that it can always find a way even in the darkest of times.
Overall, "Peace" is a poignant and moving reflection on the human experience, reminding us that even in the face of violence and conflict, peace is still a possibility if we can learn to forgive and love one another.
