Someone to Watch over Me

Still were often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet
Hes the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram
There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me
I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
Someone who'll watch over me
Although he may not be the man some
Girls think of as handsome
To my heart he carries the key
Won't you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me
In Jim Brickman's song "Someone to Watch Over Me," the lyrics convey a sense of longing and vulnerability. The singer is searching for someone special, a particular lad who has captured their thoughts and attention. Despite looking everywhere, they have not yet found this person. This search is depicted as a priority, a big affair that cannot be forgotten.
The singer reflects on their feelings of regret, indicating that this person is the only one they think of in such a way. There is a desire to be connected to this individual, symbolized by wanting to add his initial to their monogram. The question of the whereabouts of the shepherd for this lost lamb suggests a desire for guidance and protection.
The song then shifts focus to the singer expressing their longing for someone to watch over them. They hope that this person they're seeking turns out to be the one who can fulfill this role. The singer describes themselves as a little lamb lost in the wood, emphasizing their vulnerability and need for guidance. They also acknowledge their potential for goodness, highlighting their desire for someone to care for and nurture them.
The song touches on the singer's unconventional perception of beauty and attractiveness. They suggest that even if this special person may not conform to society's standards, they hold the key to the singer's heart. The lyrics end with a plea for this person to move quickly and follow the singer's lead, as they yearn for someone to watch over them.
Overall, "Someone to Watch Over Me" paints a picture of a person searching for someone special, someone who can offer guidance, protection, and emotional support. It speaks to the universal longing for connection and the need to feel secure in the presence of another.
