The Best Things in Life Are Free
Jo Stafford Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The moon belongs to everyone
The best things in life are free
The stars belong to everyone
They gleam there for you and me

The flowers in spring
The robins that sing
The sunbeams that shine
They're yours, they're mine

And love can come to everyone
The best things in life are free

Overall Meaning

The song The Best Things in Life Are Free, recorded by Jo Stafford in 1956, is a celebration of the natural world and the priceless treasures it offers. The lyrics suggest that despite the many material possessions and luxuries one may have, the most valuable things in life cannot be bought with money. The moon, stars, flowers, and sunbeams are all examples of things which belong to everyone and can be enjoyed without cost. And most importantly, love is also one of the best things in life, one which can come to anyone, regardless of their social status or financial situation.

Jo Stafford was great. Tremendous fidelity for 1947!

@mikevasiljevs412

the piano riff @1:22 is so great!

@AmericaSwingsAgain

Outstanding arrg't in every way. Plus the relaxed medium tempo with lots of burn under it.... Tight! And she opens with the last 4 bars of the tune, as intro, singing full out - right from the edge. Jo always always struck me as a little cool and detached in her vocal conception, but always SWUNG. Also dig the intro's intstrumental nod to Miller's flared "String of Pearls" intro, at the very beginning...

@BojieP

One of the best arrangements!!!!!!!!!

Ms. Stafford was once of the finest voices of the 20th. century. And all of her songs were so very well chosen. Every song she sang, fit like a glove. That cannot be said about all vocalists. Go to sleep my dear. I will hear you again someday.
