She started working as a junior doctor in the Belfast Hospital, but in 1988 she was invited to form a band with Dave Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge. In 1989, Joanne stopped practicing medicine and Iona was born. Since then, Joanna has sung all over Europe and America. Iona's recordings have become successful worldwide, making them Europe's best selling contemporary Christian band.
Hogg recorded her first solo album, Looking Into Light, in 1999. Her vocals were featured in the role-playing games Xenogears (for the Sony PlayStation) and Xenosaga (for the Sony PlayStation 2). She sang the English versions of Star of Tears and Small Two of Pieces from Xenogears, and Pain and Kokoro from Xenosaga. Star of Tears was featured on the 2-disc Xenogears: Original Soundtrack; however, the song is not normally accessible in the game. Hogg collaborated with several artists for the album New Irish Hymns and provided the female vocals on both solo releases from Troy Donockley.

Hands wrapped around a snow white dove
Both of you tremble in front of the crowd
And your mother is watching, so calm and so proud
Your hands move forward
And you let the bird fly
My eyes look upward
And in that moment,
I suddenly see
A picture of love
And what it means to be free
And now I stand watching the dove flying home
And I′m praying for another to come
My hands move forward
Waiting to receive
All that's been promised
Everything that I believe
And in that moment,
I suddenly feel
The embrace of love
And my heart set free
The song "In That Moment" tells a story of a brave boy who walks to the front of the stage with a snow white dove in his hands. Both the boy and the dove tremble in front of the crowd, while his mother watches him calmly and with pride. The boy then releases the bird and it gracefully flies upwards, taking the singer's eyes with it. The song speaks of the moment of release and the feelings of love and freedom that come with it.
The lyrics describe the moment when the singer realizes what love truly means and what it means to be free. It is the moment when the dove is released, and the singer looks upwards, gazing into the sky. In that moment, she sees a "picture of love," and these feelings stay with her as she watches the dove fly away.
The second verse sees the singer standing, watching the dove fly home, and praying for another to come. She wants to experience the same feelings of love and be free. The song ends with the singer waiting to receive all that has been promised and everything that she believes. The moment of release has opened her eyes to something new, and now she is ready to embrace it.
