Whiter Shade of Pale
Joe Cocker Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more

The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, 'There is no reason
And the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be

One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well've been closed

She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree

Saying, 'You must be the mermaid
Who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is its queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean

My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head

So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joe Cocker’s song “Whiter Shade of Pale” are enigmatic, poetic, and filled with a sense of nostalgia. It appears that the song tells the story of a man who is reliving a moment of his past, a time when he had a lover and they were dancing together, having a drink, and enjoying the music. The dance was so intense that the man felt dizzy, and the music became louder, as if the room was vibrating with its rhythm. As they raised their glasses to order another drink, the man looked at his lover, who at that moment turned pale, lost in thought.

The man then confesses that he was reluctant to let his lover go, even though she was one of sixteen virgins who were leaving for the coast. He confronted her and tried to convince her that she was a mermaid who took Neptune for a ride, trying to make sense of his reality. However, she only smiled at him sadly, and the anger he felt dissipated. As the song closes, the man seems to be falling into a dreamlike state, his mouth dry, and his words barely audible, as they crash-dived into the ocean bed.

Overall, the song is about longing, desire, and the fleeting nature of time. It captures the essence of a moment in time, a moment when two people are together, and everything around them disappears, leaving only the music and their connection to it.

Let's face it, the HOF doesn't deserve him, and a lot of other artists who have been spurned by political crap.

I asked the vicar on my wedding day if they would play Whiter shade of pale , he declined said no , I will not have that being played in this church. I was so upset that I told the organist to play what ever he wanted, if I couldn't have this music just play whatever ! We have been together now for nearly 50 years. When my time comes to say goodbuy to all who have loved me ,this Whiter of shade of pale music will be the very last thing I hear ,
