Dassin was born in New York City to Jules Dassin (Yiddish actor and film noir director) and Béatrice Launer. He began his childhood first in New York and Los Angeles, California. However after his father became a victim of the anti-communist policies of Senator Joseph McCarthy, he and his family moved from place to place across Europe.
After studying at Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, Dassin moved back to the United States to go to college at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan after doing very well on his bachelor's exam. After college, he moved back again to France where, while working at a radio station, a record label convinced him to begin to record his songs.
By the early 1970s, Dassin's songs topped the charts in France and he became well known. Probably as a recognition of his parents' left leanings, Dassin's records were officially released in the USSR. However, the political views of his parents were not well known to the general public in the USSR, and Dassin's popularity in the USSR should be connected to his talent only. He was also a talented polyglot, recording songs in German, Spanish, Italian and Greek, as well as French and English.
He died of a heart attack during a vacation to Tahiti on August 20, 1980. He is buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California.

Darlin'
Joe Dassin Lyrics

I'd call you on the phone some
But I don't have a dime
Darlin', you are so far behind me
Tomorrow's gonna find me
Farther down the line
Take a piece of paper
I'm gonna write:
"Darlin', you know I feel the cold nights
Thinking of the old nights spent along with you
Darlin' the tear's in my eye now
I know that I can try now to make it back to you"
Oh darlin'
Darlin', I love you more than ever
I wish we were together,
Darlin' mine!
Darlin', I'm feeling very lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
But I don't have a dime
Darlin', you are so far behind me
Tomorrow's gonna find me
Farther down the line
Take a piece of paper
I got a pencil in my hand
I'm gonna write:
"Darlin', you know I feel the cold nights
Thinking of the old nights spent along with you
Darlin' the tear's in my eye now
I know that I can try now to make it back to you"
Oh, darlin'...
Darlin', I'm feeleng very lonesome
And I'd call you on the phone some
But I don't have a dime...
In Joe Dassin's song "Darlin'," the singer expresses his feelings of lonesomeness and longing for his distant love. He wishes he could call her, but doesn't have the money to do so. He feels like she's far behind him and that he's moving farther away from her. He takes a piece of paper and writes a letter to his love, expressing how much he misses her and how much he loves her. He notes how the tear is in his eyes as he writes the letter, acknowledging that he wants to make it back to her. The song ultimately ends with him stating how much he loves his darling and wishes they were together.
The song is a classic romantic ballad that showcases the depth of emotions that come with missing someone you love. It's a relatable song for those who have experienced long-distance relationships or any kind of physical separation. The song's simple melody and melancholic tone perfectly capture the feelings of longing and insecurity that come with missing someone.
