Learn You
Joell Ortiz Lyrics

I know that I missed out on you
Sorry that I'm never there
I tried to get everything you wanted
I hope you know I really cared
To learn you now, to learn you now
To learn you now, to learn you now
To learn you now
To learn you now, lemme learn, lemme learn you now

I know that I missed out on you (uh)
Sorry that I'm never there (my oh my)
I tried to get everything you wanted (this one is for y'all, man)
I hope you know I really cared (my juniors)
To learn you now, to learn you now (word)
To learn you now, to learn you now (I apologize)
To learn you now
To learn you now (I apologize), lemme learn, lemme learn you now

Had to chase this dream, I was on my grind
Workin' on my craft took up all my time
I gotta beware, I'm near at the drop of a dime
But through all my travels y'all stayed on my mind
My two lil' boys, two pieces of me
My two looks in the mirror, my two reasons to be
Sorry I didn't go them places I needed to be
Trips that I missed with your school
Games I ain't root for your team
Feels like yesterday I would wake up to your screams
Y'all was cryin' for bottles, when did y'all turn into teens?
Tryna grow mustaches, peach fuzz look clean
Your voices got deeper, make sure you say what you mean
Happy y'all don't say y'all hate me for all the time I was away
What good was the toys if I never stayed there to play?
I'm askin' you both for forgiveness, can we start over today?
Y'all don't have to answer that now, I just wanted to say

I know that I missed out on you
Sorry that I'm never there
I tried to get everything you wanted
I hope you know I really cared
To learn you now, to learn you now
To learn you now, to learn you now
To learn you now
To learn you now
Lemme learn, lemme learn you now

I would stare at y'all pictures on the bus after shows
It was rough on the road, must have been tougher at home
Even on the west, I'm movin', but that bus driver know
Find me that Western Union, I'd send your mother some dough
I'd try to find time whenever I was alone
To try to get y'all on the phone just to see what's goin' on
Y'all ain't lil' boys no more, look at how much you have grown
My youngest one taller than me, my oldest my skinnier clone
I know that I missed out on you
Bothers me down to my soul, my lifestyle was out of control
Replaced time with the money, trade that I tried to barter
I'm askin' you both for forgiveness, can we start over today?
Y'all don't have to answer that now, I just wanted to say

I know that I missed out on you (I know, I know)
Sorry that I'm never there (I'm sorry, y'all)
I tried to get everything you wanted (I love y'all, man)
I hope you know I really cared (uh)
To learn you now, to learn you now (let's do it from here, start now)
To learn you now, to learn you now (you know?)

To learn you now
To learn you now (word)

πŸ’―% agree, but I wish K.R.I.T. would have had a verse on this track and spit some bars.

Cool People

This jam should take off. The lyrics actually have meaning. And of course Mr. Ortiz is on point as usual.

Real grown man ish we need more like this. Personal accountability

Thomas Martinez

Crazy. I held resentment to my pops and feel like Joell is speaking to me for him.

And at the same time, hearing the regrets Joell got, prepping me for fatherhood. Work/Life balance is key gentlemen.

Just imagine if this kind of music was pushed by the corporations and labels. People pushing this dumbed down music (which I do enjoy as well) don't give a fuck about hiphop. Music like this actually gets people through life. Just by changing the music we listen to, we can make so much progress as people. They've weaponized music and given hiphop a completely different definition for generations that are growing up on it right now. There are so many talented artists all over the world, just the wrong ones getting to the top.

"Happy you don't say y'all hate me for all the time I was away , what good was the toys if I never stayed there to play." Real grown man shit right here. I felt it! For music like this is why I still have hope for Hip Hop. πŸ™
