Little Old Lady
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Little old lady passing by
Catching everyone's eye
You have such a charming manner
Sweet and shy

Little old bonnet set in place
And a smile on your face
You're a perfect picture
In your lavender and lace

A little bit of business here
A little bit of business there
Bet that you've been window shopping
All around the square

Little old lady, time for tea
Here's a kiss, two or three

You're just like that little old lady
I hold dear to me

Overall Meaning

The song "Little Old Lady" by John Coltrane tells the story of an old woman who passes by and captures everyone's attention through her charming mannerisms. The lyrics praise her for her sweetness and shyness, while also commenting on her appearance - her bonnet and lavender lace dress make her a perfect picture. The song also implies that the old lady has been window shopping, engaging in a little bit of business here and there. The song speaks to the idea that even in old age, one can still bring joy to others through their presence and demeanor.

One interpretation of the song could be that it speaks to the human desire for connection and the need for intergenerational relationships. The old lady represents the elderly, who are often marginalized in society and whose presence is not always valued. However, the lyrics suggest that this little old lady is important and brings joy to those around her. By highlighting her gentle nature and praising her colorful appearance, the song celebrates the uniqueness and value of the elderly.

Muchas gracias.
