Who'll Stop the Rain
John Fogerty Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long as I remember the rain been comin' down
Clouds of mystery pourin' confusion on the ground.
Good men through the ages tryin' to find the sun.
And I wonder still I wonder who'll stop the rain.

I went down Virginia seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable I watched the tower grow
Five year plans and new deals wrapped in golden chains.
And I wonder still I wonder who'll stop the rain.

Heard the singers playin', how we cheered for more.
The crowd had rushed together tryin' to keep warm.

Still the rain kept pourin', fallin' on my ears
And I wonder, still I wonder who'll stop the rain.

Overall Meaning

John Fogerty's song "Who'll Stop the Rain" is a reflection on the chaos and uncertainty that exists in the world. The first verse describes the ongoing nature of the problem, suggesting that this is not a new phenomenon, and that people throughout history have struggled with how to deal with it. The clouds of mystery represent the confusion and lack of clarity that surrounds the issue.

The second verse focuses on the character's personal experience of trying to find shelter from the storm in Virginia. The tower that grows represents the growth of modern society, and the five-year plans and new deals suggest bureaucratic attempts to control the situation. However, the imagery of golden chains suggests that these attempts are misguided, and they may be hindering progress rather than promoting it.

The final verse describes a moment of hope in the face of the continuing rain. The singer and the crowd are united in their desire for relief, and the musicians offer a moment of respite. However, the rain continues to fall, leaving the question of who will ultimately bring a halt to the storm unanswered.

Overall, "Who'll Stop the Rain" speaks to the sense of helplessness that many people feel in the face of larger societal issues. It suggests that while there may be moments of relief or hope, the underlying problems remain, and the search for a solution continues.

True talents last forever. This man is as good as he ever was. No back up singers, no production, no big stage, just his guitar, his voice, his band. Gives me chills sometimes. The music talks. He wrote most of his songs and they stood the test of time just as well as he has.

Late 60s early 70s was CCR hayday! They were one band like many back then, you heard one song!!And instantly you were hooked for life, not just for their talent but always they were sending messages in the music! This song was about Woodstock 69,Back then it was the best way to be heard especially by the youth! I saw them, and Him(john Fogerty). He is as close to perfection for rockin Blues California style as anyone of that era! They were literally....Sublime! my God.... how the world has changed!!!
