Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

Hammered nails all in a row
I've worked on cars, and I've sold things too
All I need is this pickup truck
A little bit of love
And a whole lot of luck
Come Friday night I know just what to do
Screaming loud, bartender says last call
Come on back tomorrow night
I'm sure we'll have a ball
I'm just an ordinary guy all week long
Till I step inside this bar
I'm a genuine, certified, honky tonk till I die
Weekend superstar
When the weekends done and Monday comes
It's back to the same ole grind
I work hard all week for a little bitty check
The government says ain't mine
When the whistle blows
I'll be on my toes, headed back to the bar
I'm a genuine, certified, honky tonk till I die
Weekend superstar
I hear a big ole crowd
Screaming loud, bartender says last call
Come on back tomorrow night
I'm sure we'll have a ball
I'm just an ordinary guy all week long
Till I step inside this bar
I'm a genuine, certified, honky tonk till I die
Weekend superstar
The song "Weekend Superstar" by John Michael Montgomery tells the story of a hardworking man who spends the week doing various jobs to earn a living, but when the weekend rolls around, he becomes a "genuine, certified, honky tonk till I die, weekend superstar." It describes his love of going to the bar and performing in front of a crowd, enjoying the attention and feeling like a star for a night. The lyrics reflect the contrast between his everyday life and his alter-ego as a weekend superstar, highlighting the importance of letting loose and having fun.
The song also touches on the struggles of the working class and the feeling of being stuck in a job that doesn't necessarily bring fulfillment or financial security. The line "I work hard all week for a little bitty check, the government says ain't mine" speaks to the frustration of many low-income workers who pay taxes and struggle to make ends meet.
Overall, "Weekend Superstar" is a fun and upbeat song that celebrates the joys of life outside of work and the thrill of performing in front of a crowd.
