your body beneath the sheet
as you drifted away
I knew the division was complete
I brushed back your hair
knelt and kissed you goodnight
I knew it was the last time
I'd ever witness the sight
What could have been said
what could have been done
seems I'd been fighting the end
since before we'd begun
I walked out alone you know
I've done this before
shut my eyes, took a breath
turned and closed the door
then the sun rose in front of me
thought of my little one
turned my face into the wind
isn't this place familiar, little girl
seems like we're going
on alone once again
and she said,
you keep walking on right
here beside me
it's just you and me again
The song "Right Here Beside Me" by John Wesley is a poignant and emotional exploration of loss and the sudden ending of a relationship. The opening lines describe the singer's experience of watching their lover pass away, bringing about a deep sense of finality and separation. As the singer says goodbye, they reflect on what might have been different and the ways in which they've struggled to hold onto the relationship.
Despite their grief, the singer finds a sense of comfort and companionship in their child, who reminds them that they are not alone. The child's poignant and heartfelt reassurance - "you keep walking on right here beside me / it's just you and me again" - brings a sense of hope and comfort to the singer, even in the midst of their sorrow.
Overall, "Right Here Beside Me" is a moving and thought-provoking exploration of what it means to grieve and to find solace in the midst of loss. It speaks to the ways in which relationships can be both beautiful and fragile, and reminds us that even in the darkest moments, we are never truly alone.
