Born in Houston, Texas, Nash began as a pop singer in the 1950s. He became famous for singing the theme song for The Mighty Hercules cartoon in the early 1960s (which song he also wrote). His biggest hits were the early reggae tunes Hold Me Tight, I Can See Clearly Now, and Stir It Up, written by Bob Marley prior to Marley's international success.
Nash was last active as a composer in the Swedish romance Vill så gärna tro (1971) in which he portrayed Robert. For many years he seemed to have dropped out of sight; however, in May 2006 he was singing again at SugarHill Recording Studio in his native Houston.

The lyrics to Johnny Nash's song "Reggae On Broadway" are an invitation to dance and make romance. The chorus repeats the phrase "Reggae is on Broadway", which is an interesting concept that can mean different things. Broadway is known for musical theater and bright lights, and reggae is a style of music that originated in Jamaica. Together, they create a unique blend of elements that celebrate music, dancing, and love.
The song appeals to the senses by using a variety of sounds, including the beat of the music that invites people to get out on the dance floor. When Nash sings, "I'm in the mood, so give me some food", it evokes a sense of celebration, as people often eat and drink when they gather to dance and socialize. The lyrics also suggest a desire for physical intimacy, with Nash singing, "I wanna make romance." The repetition of the phrases, "Get down, get down, get down" and "Let's do it some more," create a sense of urgency and excitement that encourages listeners to join in.
Overall, "Reggae On Broadway" is an upbeat and lively song that celebrates the joy of music, dancing, and love. The unique combination of reggae music and the idea of Broadway creates a fun and intriguing atmosphere that makes you want to get up and dance.
