Easy to Love
Johnny Smith and Stan Getz Lyrics

I know too well that I'm just wasting precious time
In thinking such a thing could be
That you could ever care for me
I'm sure you hate to hear
That I adore you, dear
But grant me

Just the same
I'm not entirely to blame
For love
You'd be so easy to love
So easy to idolize
All others above
So worth the yearning for
So swell to keep every home fire burning for

We'd be so grand at the game
So carefree together
That it does seem a shame
That you can't see
Your future with me
Cause you'd be oh, so easy to love

Johnny is great. All his phrases are pure dynamite!!!

Johnny Smith was awesome. The transcription of this solo is in "Johnny Smith Guitar Solos" by Steve Silverman. Great book, (just solos though, no heads), and it's dead accurate. J.S. was one of Benson's big influences, and it easy to hear why.

Hey, dig that line he plays at 2:11-- Pretty cool pattern... Gotta slow it down and see what the heck it is!

In the XII pos. ascend an Am triad - A,C, & E on strings 3-1. Put 3rd finger on F, 13 fret, 1st string and descend the same three strings, F, B & F#. Next, a step lower from where you began, Gm up the same way, then descend Eb, A & E. Continue until you run out of frets. Good luck playing it that cleanly. As Barney Kessel said some 50 years ago, "As far as I'm concerned, no one in the world plays better than he. They might play differently, but no one plays better." It was as true then as it is now. Different? Yes. Better? Hasn't happened yet.

I'm fickle when it comes to choosing a "favorite" guitarist-- First it was Smith, then Kessel, and now it's Joe Pass....I guess it would be safe to consider them as comprising a "triangle of favorites"-- all of equal value in their own right, but hard to favor one over the others overall.
