What's New
Johnny Smith and Stan Getz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What's new?
How is the world treating you?
You haven't changed a bit
Handsome as ever I must admit

What's new?
How did that romance come through?
We haven't met since then
Gee, but it's nice to see you again

What's new?
Probably I'm boring you
But seeing you is grand
And you were sweet to offer your hand
I understand

Adieu
Pardon my asking what's new
Of course you couldn't know
I haven't changed
I still love you so

Adieu
Pardon my asking what's new
Of course you couldn't know

I haven't changed
I still love you so

Overall Meaning

The song "What's New" performed by Johnny Smith and Stan Getz, is a classic love song that focuses on a chance encounter between two former lovers. The song starts with the lyrics "What's new? How is the world treating you?" indicating that the two lovers haven't seen each other in a while and are catching up. The singer then proceeds to compliment their former lover by saying, "You haven't changed a bit, handsome as ever I must admit." This line shows that the singer still finds their ex-lover attractive and that they still hold a special place in their heart.

The song then shifts to the singer asking about their former partner's romantic life, "How did that romance come through? We haven't met since then. Gee, but it's nice to see you again." These lyrics suggest that the two lovers have been separated for a long time and are now meeting again by chance.

As the song continues, the singer acknowledges that they might be boring their former partner with their questions but that seeing them again is "grand." The singer also thanks their former partner for offering their hand and says "I understand" suggesting that the two of them can remain friends despite their past romantic relationship.

The song concludes with the lines "Adieu, pardon my asking what's new. Of course, you couldn't know. I haven't changed. I still love you so." These lyrics show that the singer still has feelings for their former lover and that although time has passed, their emotions have not changed.

Overall, "What's New" is a tender and nostalgic song that explores the themes of love, loss, and the power of memory. The lyrics highlight the joy and sorrow that come with reconnecting with a former lover and demonstrate that the emotional bonds we create with others can last a lifetime.

Forgot about the greatness of this album! Johnny Smith’s light, airy tone combined with easy, swinging guitar pairs well Getz’s feathery, light tone and melodic sax. Beautiful 🎶🎼

John Choat

I have a copy of the original LP, bought in 1952 when I was 15, and it was my intro to both Johnny and Stan......the vinyl is almost worn through.....so timeless!

Alan Senzaki

Timeless beautiful classic. Just lovely from the fifties.🎶🎹🎸

This version of Moonlight in Vermont is exactly how I imagine it should sound.

Ronald Unkel

Beautiful guitar playing and (separately) joined by three lyrical-style tenorists creating lovely nostalgic/elegant jazz. Nice upload. Enjoy, toodeloo’s & Cheers!

Gab Chaim

What strikes is the completely incomparable + immediately recognizable sound of Johnny's guitar.
