Poison Ivy
Jonas Brothers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I just got back from the doctor
He told me that I had a problem
But I realized it's you

I try to scratch away the issue
All I ever get is tissues
So I can wipe away my tears
Everyone's allergic to poison ivy
Everyone's allergic to poison ivy
Everybody gets the itch
Everybody hates that
Everyone's allergic to poison ivy

Now, I found out you were lying
When you told me you were trying
Just to medicate the rash

Tangled vines they got deceiving
From the lines that now are leading
To the truth I need to hear

Everyone's allergic to poison ivy
Everyone's allergic to poison ivy
Everybody gets the itch
Everybody hates that
Everyone's allergic to poison ivy

Yeah
I breakout and I start to shake
When I hear your name, I can't walk away
I just can't do it

I can't stop, even if I tried
I lay down my pride, I can't walk away

I get burned and I have to learn
That the court's adjourned
I can't walk away

You tell lines and your tangled vines
Well I try and just can't walk away

Poison
Poison
Poison ivy

Everyone's allergic to poison ivy
Everybody needs a little poison ivy
Everybody wants a little poison ivy

Everybody gets the itch
Everybody hates that
Everybody needs a little poison ivy

Everybody gets the itch
Everybody hates that
Everybody needs a little poison ivy

Poison ivy
Poison ivy
Poison ivy
Poison ivy

Gimme some poison baby, uh

Overall Meaning

The Jonas Brothers' song "Poison Ivy" is about a toxic relationship that brings pain and discomfort just like exposure to poison ivy. The first two lines of the song suggest that the singer has a health problem but finds out that it was a result of being in a relationship with someone. He tries to scratch away the issue, but all he ever gets is tissues, which could mean that he is experiencing emotional pain and tears. The chorus "Everyone's allergic to poison ivy, everybody gets the itch, everybody hates that, everyone's allergic to poison ivy" suggests that the pain caused by the toxic relationship is universal and everyone can relate to having been in a relationship that caused them distress.

In the second verse, the singer finds out that his partner was lying to him when they said they were trying to medicate the relationship. He realizes the truth and that the tangled vines of their relationship are deceiving, and it’s time to walk away. The bridge of the song suggests that the singer is struggling to walk away from the toxic relationship even though he knows it's the best thing for him. His love for his partner is like poison ivy, and he can't stop itching, so he can't walk away.

Overall, "Poison Ivy" is an allegory of a toxic relationship that everyone can relate to, and the pain it causes can be as uncomfortable as poison ivy.
