Lullaby
Joni James Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Every kiss has left a bruise
You've been raiding too much meaning from existence
Now your head is used and sore
And the forecast is for more
Memories falling, like falling rain
Falling rain
A piano, out of tune
You're an angel
You're a demon
You're just human
Now your world has turned to trash
Broken windows on the past
Take that child and teach him senseless
Damage the dream, damage the dream
I feel nothing, i feel nothing at all
I feel nothing at all
In this gloomy, haunted place
All the feelings are of shame
All the windows have been broken by the children
So the wind screams up the stairs
Slams the doors and rattles chairs
I wish we weren't conceived in violence
Damage the dream, damage the dream
The magic is broken
The house is in ruins
Your memory's one-sided
The side that you're choosing feels nothing
Feels nothing at all
We feel nothing at all
The lyrics of Joni James's song "Lullaby" depict a sense of emotional damage and disillusionment. The first verse speaks of a mother's spell, implying that there was once a sense of enchantment and happiness. However, every kiss now leaves a bruise, symbolizing a hurtful and bitter experience. The singer of the song seems to have become jaded, extracting too much meaning from existence and feeling used and sore. The forecast for their future is more memories falling, suggesting a sense of melancholy and disappointment.
The second verse continues the theme of disillusionment and emotional turmoil. The view others have of the singer is compared to an out-of-tune piano, reflecting a lack of harmony or understanding. They are described as both an angel and a demon, highlighting their conflicting nature as a complex and flawed human being. Their world has turned into trash with broken windows on the past, indicating a sense of shattered dreams and regret. The lyrics also mention teaching a child senseless, suggesting the perpetuation of harmful patterns or behaviors.
In the final verse, the atmosphere is described as gloomy and haunted, filled with shame and broken windows caused by the children. The wind screams, symbolizing the presence of turmoil and chaos. The singer expresses a wish that they were not conceived in violence, implying that their upbringing or past experiences have had a profound negative impact on their life. The magic is broken, the house is in ruins, and their memory is one-sided, suggesting a distorted perception of their own past. They, and perhaps others, feel nothing at all, indicating a deep emotional numbness and detachment.
Overall, "Lullaby" paints a picture of a wounded and disillusioned individual, grappling with the consequences of past experiences and struggling to find meaning and connection in their life.
