Midnight Train
Jonny Lang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was standin' at the station,
ten to midnight in the rain
I was mindin' my own bus'ness,
waiting for that midnight train

Nobody in sight, starin' at my shoes,
I took out my paper to find me some good news
Mindin' my own bus'ness,
when the ticket man calls my name
Yeah, yeah, babe

There ain't no midnight train
There ain't no midnight train
There ain't no midnight train
Comin' down the line

So I say, "If it ain't too much trouble,
when's the local out of town?"
His reply: "Two a.m."
If I'm leavin' local-bound

I can catch it in forty minutes,
if I want to grab the express
But the local trains are hard to come by,
this time of night, more or less
Listen, said

There ain't no midnight train
There ain't no midnight train
There ain't no midnight train
Comin' down the line

So I stood for forty minutes,
it was raining and it was cold
When the express rolled down the track,
I did not care where it was gonna go
Yeah, yeah

He said
There ain't no midnight train
There ain't no midnight train

There ain't no midnight train
Comin' down the line

Overall Meaning

In Jonny Lang's song Midnight Train, the singer is waiting at the station ten minutes before midnight in the rain. While waiting, he is minding his own business, looking for good news in the paper when the ticket man calls his name. The singer asks about the midnight train, and the ticket man replies that there is no such train. Instead, he tells the singer about the local train leaving at 2 am. The singer can catch it if he wants to grab the express, but the local train is hard to come by.

The song is essentially about being stuck and waiting for something that may never come, in this case, the midnight train. It is a metaphor for the feeling of being stuck in life and waiting for something to happen, for a solution or an opportunity to present itself. The singer stands for forty minutes in the rain, waiting for any train that could lead him out of there. He takes the express not caring where it goes as long as it gets him away from there.

One interesting interpretation of the song is that it is inspired by Lang's love for blues music. The midnight train is a common theme in blues music, and Lang has been known to incorporate blues elements in his music. Another interesting fact about the song is that it was co-written with Dennis Morgan, who has written songs for popular artists such as Randy Travis and Dolly Parton. The song was also included in Lang's Grammy-nominated album Turn Around.
