The song Crosses, from Crosses EP and the later Veneer, appeared on the finale of the second season of the popular American television comedy-drama The O.C.. His cover of Heartbeats (also from Veneer) was used in a popular Sony BRAVIA TV commercial featuring coloured bouncing balls in San Francisco and an episode of Zach Braff's Scrubs
His song Far Away was also prominently featured in the Rockstar video game Red Dead Redemption.
His trademark sound is solo acoustic guitar with soft melody. His work, although mostly original, does include acoustic covers of great hits such as Love Will Tear Us Apart, Born in the U.S.A., and Teardrop.
González also appears in the Zero 7 album The Garden, in which he sings on three tracks and on a re-worked version of Crosses.
Save Your Day
José González Lyrics

Ignore the moaning as it tumbles to the ground
Be brave and save your day
These days are cold, numbers rule I've been told
The pattern's clear better fit in the mold
You need to be brave and save your day
To cough up sympathy isn't hard but it costs
Hold tight to your life savings
You have to do what you must to save your day
So poke the body and roll it down
The grave looks cold but we're still young
We're still young
José González’s song “Save Your Day” is a contemplative work that pushes the idea of necessity and our inward selves. The lyrics provoke a grim thought, denying pity and ignoring the cries of the stricken. The verse “Poke the body with a stick, roll it down, Ignore the moaning as it tumbles to the ground. Be brave and save your day” is unusual and metaphorical. González sees life as being short and that we should keep a firm grip on it. He implies that we shouldn’t let arbitrary things like our sympathy and emotion hold us back. Instead, we should be brave and make the hard decisions that let us take control of our lives.
González believes that the world is ruled by numbers, and our existence is limited, so we have to be brave to save our day. Even though we could express sympathy, as humans are naturally empathetic beings, it comes at a cost that can sometimes be detrimental. He advises that sometimes we must hold tightly to our life savings and make things happen because no one else will. The final verse encapsulates his entire philosophy, where he says, “So poke the body and roll it down, The grave looks cold but we're still young, We're still young,” emphasizing that we must make the most out of our time with all we have.
