If I Loved You
Josh Groban Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.

If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go!
Longin' to tell you,
But afraid and shy,
I'd let my golden chances pass me by!

Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,
Never, never to know how I loved you
If I loved you.

If I loved you,
Time and again I would try to say
All I'd want you to know.

If I loved you,
Words wouldn't come in an easy way
Round in circles I'd go!

Longin' to tell you,
But afraid and shy,
I'd let my golden chances pass me by!

Soon you'd leave me,
Off you would go in the mist of day,

Never, never to know how I loved you
If I loved you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "If I Loved You" by Josh Groban are a classic example of a love song where the singer is too afraid and insecure to express their true feelings to the person they love. The singer repeats that they would try to tell their love interest how they feel, but they cannot find the right words to express themselves. They are afraid of not being able to convey their emotions properly and losing the chance to be with the person they love. This is a common theme in many love songs, as many people can relate to the struggle of finding the courage to express their feelings to the people they care about.

The lyrics also suggest that the singer is aware that their chances with the person they love are limited. They fear that the opportunity to be with their love interest will slip away, and they will never know the depth of the singer's love. This heightens the sense of urgency and desperation in the lyrics, as the singer tries to find a way to confess their love before it's too late.

This is beautiful. Josh Groban is a gift. I'm embarrassed to say I never heard of Audra McDonald. I looked her up and what a wonderful talent. Another gift.

Came for Josh, stayed for Audra.

I was seven years old when my parents took us to a matinee performance of Carousel. Seven, I didn't want to go. I found the power of music then, this has remained one of my favourite songs. I'm 70 now and it still makes me cry.

@paulieinct

One of the greatest duets of all time.

This by far is going to be his best album in 15 years! As much as he tries to reshape it, Josh Groban's voice hasn't changed much from baritone to low tenor. It seemed a matter of repertoire. He hit it out of the ball park this time picking the right songs within his range that truly showcases the  warm  timbre and color of his voice. He always wanted to sing music theatre and this album means he has finally come full circle from classical crossover to contemporary music theatre. A nice move for the next step which is to earn a spot on Broadway.
