Was the worst day of my life
(You can say that again)
I woke up at 7 to the news that the world went south
Oh shit
Went into work at 9
And the ticker-tape was in red
From the top of the world and now I can't butter my bread
A weekend like nothing else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
Again and again now
A Lehman weekend
Why wasn't it someone else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
I found out at 10
That I'd lost my house and wife
(I'm leaving)
She said I'm taking my things and the kids for a better life
So I said to myself
(Fuck)
Why do bad things always seem to hit in 3's
(One, two, three, fuck)
Now I'm begging on my knees
God save me from this unfamiliar kind of disease
It's a Lehman weekend
A weekend like nothing else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
Again and again now
A Lehman weekend
Why wasn't it someone else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
Oh no
Cos' I've been wondering
(I've been wondering)
If I've been here before
I've lost my mind
Where did it all go wrong
It's a Lehman weekend
A weekend like nothing else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
Again and again now
It's a Lehman weekend
A weekend like nothing else
Yeah
You think it can't get any worse
And then it hits you again
Again and again now
It's a Lehman weekend
It's a Lehman weekend
Again and again now
The song "Weekend" by Joy explores the daily grind of working in a job that brings little satisfaction, and the solace found in anticipating the time off on weekends. The opening verse describes the unpleasant and jarring sound of an alarm clock ringing, signaling the start of yet another day of work. The repitition of "again, again, again" emphasizes the monotony and repetitveness of this routine. The chorus introduces the idea that weekends are for dreaming, for escaping the drudgery of the work week, and for finding happiness. "Pull up a chair to the table of despair" suggests a sense of collective misery and shared experiences among those who feel trapped in their jobs, and look forward to the freedom of the weekends.
The second verse is about the challenges faced by a young man struggling in his line of work, and the physical toll that the job takes on him. The repetition of "it only gets worse" creates a sense of foreboding and hopelessness. The same chorus follows, emphasizing that the weekend is the only escape from this daily grind. The last line of the song, "We'll be happy someday", suggests a sense of longing and hope for a better future.
The song speaks to the universal experience of feeling trapped in a job that is unfulfilling, and the promise of freedom and happiness offered by the weekend. The repeated chorus creates a sense of communal experience and shared longing for something better. The song is both melancholy and hopeful, acknowledging the difficulties of everyday life while holding onto the possibility of a brighter future.
Line by Line Meaning
Is there a more unpleasant sound
What could be more disturbing?
Than an alarm clock screaming out?
Than a blaring, screeching wake up call?
I fumble around, to quiet it down
I groggily search for the mute button.
Do it again, again, again, again, and again
Repeat the same awful groggy routine.
So pull up a chair
Take a seat beside me.
To the table of despair
To a shared experience of disappointment.
We live for the weekends
We only truly experience life on Saturdays and Sundays.
Yeah, they're for dreamin'
Weekends serve as the only moment of hope, fantasy and release.
'Cause nobody cares
Because nobody is paying attention.
Least of all your peers
Especially the people around you.
There goes Sunday
Sunday has come to an end.
We'll be happy someday
We will only find happiness in the future, beyond the work week.
Is there a more unpleasant sound
What could be more annoying?
Than a young man complaining about
Than hearing a new worker constantly whine about
His line of work? It only gets worse
Their work is only going to be frustrating.
As every part of you begins to hurt
They will start to resent every aspect of their job.
So pull up a chair
Join in on this commiseration.
To the table of despair
Come, sit and share in our misery.
We live for the weekends
We are chasing Saturdays and Sundays.
Yeah, they're for dreamin'
They are for escaping reality and fantasizing.
'Cause nobody cares
There is no attention or concern given.
Least of all your peers
Especially your colleagues.
There goes Sunday
Sunday is winding down.
We'll be happy someday
We hope for joy in the future.
