The Sound of Music
Joy Division Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See my true reflection
Cut off my own connections
I can see life getting harder
So sad is this sensation
Reverse the situation
I can't see it getting better

I'll walk you through the heartbreak
Show you all the out takes
I can't see it getting higher
Systematically degraded
Emotionally a scapegoat
I can't see it getting better

Perverse and unrealistic
Try to make it all stick
I can't see it getting better
Hollow now, I'm burned out
Oh, I need to break out
I can't see life getting higher
Love, life, makes you feel higher
Love of life, makes you feel higher
Higher, higher, higher, higher

Higher, higher, higher, higher
Love of life, makes you feel higher

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Joy Division's "Sound of Music" convey a sense of disillusionment and pessimism towards life. The first line, "See my true reflection, cut off my own connections," suggests a desire to disconnect from one's current way of living and re-evaluate who they are. However, the outlook is bleak as the next lines discuss life getting harder and being trapped in a sad sensation. The singer can't see the situation getting any better.

The chorus of the song continues with the same despairing tone. The singer promises to "walk you through the heartbreak," indicating that they have gone through painful experiences before. They can't envision life getting any higher or better. The lines "systematically degraded, emotionally a scapegoat" are especially poignant as they suggest that the singer feels like they are being unfairly victimized in society.

The final lines of the chorus feature a repetition of the phrase "Love of life, makes you feel higher." Despite the overall negative tone of the song, this phrase suggests that there is still some glimmer of hope that the singer is holding onto. Perhaps they are trying to convince themselves that there is still some good left in the world.

I really like the fact that this explanation is thorough and provides some insight regarding the song's meaning, seen by the line by line meaning. It is true that the listener is open to interpretations, the way that they personally perceive the song, how it might resonate with them on an intimal level. Though, like the majority of songs, there is a "standard definition" , I would say that everyone is open to their own interpretations based on the overall perspective of the listener. Like this analysis,, I have my own respective one. This is by far one of the most "optimistic" meanings granted to the song. Personally, I always correlated the sing with a more pessimistic meaning, but like any other form of art, songs are open to interpretation and thats what makes it all special and awesome.
