Juaneco y Su Combo was originally founded by the amateur saxophonist Juan Wong Paredes as Juaneco y su Conjunto. In 1969, Paredes handed over control of the band to his son, Juan Wong Popolizio, who subsequently renamed it "Juaneco y su Combo". During the early 1970's, the band's popularity peaked, and they became one of the most innovative Peruvian cumbia bands at the time and a pioneer in the jungle cumbia genre. The band's members performed in headgear made from parrot feathers and cotton tunics, similar to the Shipibo people of Peru. In 1977, five of the band's members died in a plane crash. Surviving member was singer Wilindoro Cacique (José Wilindoro Cacique Flores, Pucallpa, 24 March 1942 - 20 July 2017).

Este grupo aparece en el año 1966, en la Amazonía peruana, teniendo como integrantes fundamentales a Juan Wong Paredes Juaneco en los teclados, a Noé El Brujo Fachín en la primera guitarra, y a Wilindoro Cacique en la primera voz a Rosendo Hidalgo el los timbales ,Walter Dominguez en el bajo a Juvencio Pinchi el las comgas ,Wilverti murrieta en la segunda guitarra

Ellos fueron el primer grupo musical formado en Pucallpa, los pioneros de la cumbia del oriente en el Perú, con un sonido que recordaba de manera obligada a su tierra natal, ya que imprimían en sus temas la alegría típica de la gente de esa zona del país. Llegaron a tocar en otros paises, como Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela y Brasil.

Su aparición se da en el momento de auge de Selva Peruana, con el boom del Petróleo. Por lo que ellos le cantaban a la riqueza de su suelo, al poder de su tierra, y a la alegría que sentían ya que, como ellos mismos decían, el Perú por fin había volteado a ver a la muchas veces olvidada Selva.

El año de 1970, graban su primer disco de 45 RPM, con los temas La Fiesta de San Juan y Me Robaron mi Runa Mula, debido al gran éxito alcanzado, graban su primer Long Play, titulado El Gran Cacique, que incluía temas clásicos como Mujer Hilandera, La Sirenita Enamorada y la soberbia Vacilando con Ayahuasca.

Luego vendrían otros LP's todos con grandes éxitos, como Dale Juaneco, Viajando por la Selva, Aquí estan... los Reyes de la Selva, entre otros.

El 2 de mayo de 1976, cuando retornaban de una presentación por el Día del Trabajador en la ciudad de San Ramón, Chanchamayo, cinco integrantes se embarcaron en la avioneta que los llevaría de regreso a su ciudad natal Pucallpa, sufriendo la caída de la aeronave y el fallecimiento de todos sus ocupantes. Los que no se embarcaron en la aeronave por tener que viajar a Lima para recoger un long play que recién habían grabado, fueron Juan Wong Paredes, director, y Wilindoro Cacique vocalista,Rosendo Hidalgo, timbalero y Juvencio Pinchi, conguero quienes se enteraron de la tragedia al día siguiente. A la muerte de la mayoría de sus integrantes, se recompuso el grupo e ingresó la segunda generación de músicos.

Actualmente, Juaneco y Su Combo sigue llevando a cabo presentaciones en el interior, y algunas veces en Lima, hoy el líder del grupo es Mao Wong López, nieto del mítico Juaneco.

Junto con Los mirlos, son los máximos exponentes del llamado Poder Verde.
