The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Judas Priest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Journey with the dawn
As I take the winding road
Bow my head forlorn
Now I must go
I'm banished in exile
I wander this land
I'm in their command
Cross over the mountains
And valleys so wide
I walk as I wonder
With hope by my side
All my friends are far away
How I miss my home
Where do I find peace of mind
Guide me as I roam
I cry for you
I'm banished in exile
To meet their demand
Rejected messiah
They don't understand
I'm searching for something
That's lost in my heart
God knows I'm a sinner
I'm falling apart
If this is my destiny
I've got to believe
The passion inside me
Has left me to bleed
I'm banished in exile
I wander this land
No faith in the future
I'm in their command
Cross over the mountains
And valleys so wide
I walk as I wonder
With hope by my side
If this is my destiny
I've got to believe
This passion inside of me
Has left me to bleed
The lyrics of Judas Priest’s song “Exiled” convey the feelings of a person who has been banished from their home and forced to wander in a different land. The singer describes the fear that has forced them to leave, their loneliness, and their longing for home and peace. Despite this, they remain hopeful and continue to search for the answers they seek.
The opening verse of the song sets the stage for the rest of the lyrics. The singer is leaving their home because they fear someone or something, and they embark on a journey at dawn. The second verse reveals that the singer is banished and in exile, and they are under the control of others. They walk through mountains and valleys, always wondering and hoping for something better.
As the song progresses, the lyrics convey the sense of longing for home and security. The singer misses their friends and is searching for peace of mind. They cry out for guidance and feel like a rejected messiah. The singer’s searching heart leads them to question their destiny and seek out the passion that is lost inside themselves.
The lyrics to “Exiled” have a powerful emotional resonance that speaks to anyone who has felt homesick or lost. The song captures the emotions of isolation, longing, and uncertainty that can arise when one is forced to leave their home and confront the unknown.
