The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Flame Thrower
Judas Priest Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You better try to race against the gun
There's nothing left for you to prove
You get a chance then now's the time to move
Nothing to rival
This heavy load
Pray for survival
You're on the run from the stun of the flame thrower
Sealing your fate, incinerate by the flame thrower
No remedy so be afraid
It's cutting deep just like the razor blade
No escape, you're in a spell
Don't you believe you stand a chance in hell
Rays of redemption
Fall from the sky
Into the maelstrom
Blink of an eye
You're on the run from the stun of the flame thrower
Sealing your fate, annihilate by the flame thrower
Immolate the bodies
No one will be saved
Consecrate with fire
Ashes fill the grave
Look to the sky and face the sun
You better try to race against the gun
There's no escape, you're in a spell
Don't you believe you stand a chance in hell
Nothing to rival
This heavy load
Pray for survival
End of the road
You're on the run from the stun of the flame thrower
Sealing your fate, terminate by the flame thrower
Flame thrower

The lyrics of "Flame Thrower" by Judas Priest describe a scene of desperation and panic as someone is on the run from the destructive force of a flame thrower. The song speaks to the feeling of being powerless and facing an unstoppable force as the singer is pursued by the flame thrower, ultimately leading to their demise. The lyrics also allude to themes of redemption and hope with scattered references to prayer, survival, rays of redemption falling from the sky, and facing the sun as a symbol of determination.
The repetition of the phrase, "You're on the run from the stun of the flame thrower," emphasizes the urgency and danger of the situation, with the singer having no choice but to attempt to outrun their destruction. The song's refrain, "Flame thrower, Flame thrower," is a menacing reminder of the fiery weapon that is relentlessly pursuing the singer.
Overall, the lyrics of "Flame Thrower" create a vivid and intense story that speaks to the fear and desperation of facing an unstoppable force, while still offering a hint of hope for redemption in the face of destruction.
