The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

You think you run the scene
I don't believe how you'd conceive
That your good enough for me
You think you've got it all sewn up
But I'll cut you right down to size
The way I figure you don't exist
So you'd better realize
Don't you touch
Don't get near
Don't take me for a fool
Make no mistake
No give and take
I'm too good for you
So keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off me
Hands off
Keep your hands off me
I'm number one when I turn it on
Do you think you can relate
You'd be amazed, left in a daze
To see me operate
Don't you touch
Don't get near
Don't take me for a fool
Make no mistake
No give and take
I'm too good for you
So keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
You live in a fantasy
I don't even care.
If you're lookin' for sympathy
It ain't there
Hands off
Keep your dirty hands off me.
So keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Keep your hands off
Private property
Hands off
Oh oh
Hands off
In Judas Priest's song "Property," the lyrics exude a strong message of self-empowerment and standing up for oneself. The song speaks to the idea that one is in control of their own life and no one has the right to take that power away. The lyrics begin by addressing an individual who thinks they "run the scene," but the singer quickly dismisses that idea by stating that they are "too good" for this person. The chorus reiterates this message of control and ownership, with the singer insisting that their body and personal space is private property and should be respected as such.
The song also addresses the idea of being underestimated by others. The singer states that when they "turn it on," they are number one and challenges others to try and keep up with them. The lyrics suggest that the person in question is often left in a "daze" which further emphasizes the theme of empowerment and control.
Overall, "Property" is a song about asserting oneself and taking control of one's life. It speaks to the universal desire to be seen as powerful and to have one's boundaries and personal space respected by others.
