The band's membership has seen much turnover, including a revolving cast of drummers in the 1970s and the departure of singer Rob Halford in 1992. Tim "Ripper" Owens, formerly of Winter's Bane, replaced Halford in 1996 and recorded two albums with Judas Priest, before Halford returned to the band in 2003. The current line-up consists of Halford, guitarists Glenn Tipton and Richie Faulkner, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis. The band's best-selling album is 1982's Screaming for Vengeance, with their most commercially successful line-up featuring Ian Hill, Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, guitarist K. K. Downing, and drummer Dave Holland. Tipton and Hill are the only two members of the band to appear on every album.
Halford's operatic vocal style and the twin guitar sound of Downing and Tipton have been a major influence on heavy metal bands. Judas Priest's image of leather, spikes, and other taboo articles of clothing were widely influential during the glam metal era of the 1980s. The Guardian referred to British Steel as the record that defines heavy metal. Despite a decline in exposure during the mid-1990s, the band has once again seen a resurgence, including worldwide tours, being inaugural inductees into the VH1 Rock Honors in 2006, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2010, and having their songs featured in video games such as Guitar Hero and the Rock Band series. In 2022, Judas Priest were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

(I'm looking down on you)
(My lasers trace)
(Everything you do)
You think you've private lives
Think nothing of the kind
There is no true escape
I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean
I'm elected, electric spy
I'm protected, electric eye
(Always in focus)
(Can't feel my stare)
(I zoom into you)
(But you don't know I'm there)
I take a pride in probing all your secret moves
My tearless retina takes pictures that can prove
I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean
I'm elected, electric spy
I'm protected, electric eye
(Electric eye) in the sky
(Feel my stare) always there
There's nothing you can do about it
Develop and expose
I feed upon your every thought
So my power grows
I'm made of metal
My circuits gleam
I am perpetual
I keep the country clean
I'm elected, electric spy
I'm protected, electric eye
I'm elected, electric spy
I'm elected protective, detective, electric eye
The lyrics to Judas Priest's "The Hellion/Electric Eye" paint a vivid picture of a dystopian surveillance society where a relentless and omnipresent entity, symbolized by the electric eye, observes and monitors every move of individuals. The singer, embodying this electric eye, claims to be made of metal with gleaming circuits, emphasizing a cold and unfeeling nature that sees everything without bias or emotion. The repetition of "I am perpetual, I keep the country clean" suggests a sense of duty and authority in maintaining order through constant surveillance.
The tone of the lyrics is ominous and eerie, as the electric eye boasts about its power to intrude on private lives and expose secrets. Lines like "My lasers trace everything you do" and "My tearless retina takes pictures that can prove" evoke a sense of violation and invasion of privacy, highlighting the dystopian theme of surveillance and control. The electric eye's ability to zoom in and probe every move, combined with the image of an ever-watchful gaze, creates a sense of paranoia and helplessness in the face of constant scrutiny.
The repeated refrain of being "elected, electric spy" and "protected, electric eye" suggests a sense of authority and legitimacy in the surveillance activities of the electric eye. The reference to being elected can be interpreted as a metaphor for the societal structures that allow such invasive surveillance to exist, with the electric eye positioning itself as a protector and enforcer of order. The lyrics also suggest a symbiotic relationship where the electric eye feeds on individuals' thoughts and grows in power, further emphasizing its dominance and control.
Overall, "The Hellion/Electric Eye" serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of surveillance and loss of privacy in a modern society where technology enables constant monitoring. The lyrics reveal a dark and oppressive world where individuals are subjected to constant scrutiny and control by a powerful and unrelenting force, leaving them with no escape and highlighting the perils of unchecked surveillance and authority. It's a thought-provoking commentary on the intersection of technology, power, and individual autonomy in a world where privacy is increasingly under threat.

@@ianjohnson6317 , "The Oath"
Burning embers of the second death will come in the night
Priests and kings, the alpha and omega, poison bites
False prophets and deceivers, swing from the trees
Now dawn the age of birds
Drunk with blood, like lepers with disease
Lord of the sky, mercury the guide
Lord of the underworld, I swear the sacred rite
I will crucify, slay them with their tribe
Hear my war cry
They'll find no sanctuary hidden in their ancestral halls
Let loose the knot that binds
The spirit and flesh, let it fall
For only courage and heroism linger after death
So, hold fast thy sword, rejecting pain, feel the dragons breath
Lord of the sky, mercury the guide
Lord of the underworld, I swear the sacred rite
I will crucify, slay them with their tribe
Hear my war cry
I've sworn the oath
I've sworn the oath
I've sworn the oath
Lord of the sky, mercury the guide
Lord of the underworld, I swear the sacred rite
I will crucify, slay them with their tribe
Hear my war cry
Burning embers of the second death will come in the night
