Day In
Judy Garland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Day in, day out
The same old hoodoo follows me about
The same old pounding in my heart whenever I think of you
And, darling, I think of you
Day in and day out

Day out, day in
I needn't tell you how my days begin
When I awake, I awaken with a tingle
One possibility in view
That possibility of maybe seeing you

Come rain, come shine
I meet you and to me the day is fine
Then I kiss your lips
And the pounding becomes
The ocean's roar
A thousand drums
Can't you see it's love
Can there be any doubt

When there it is
Day in, day out

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song Day In Day Out by Judy Garland and Lena Horne convey the idea of an obsessive love that follows the singer around. It is a love that causes her heart to pound with excitement whenever she thinks of her beloved. The feelings of love are so continuous that she thinks of her beloved day in and day out, with no relief from her emotions. Even when the days are the same, the singer's thoughts of her beloved provide a sense of excitement and anticipation.

The lyrics also speak to the power of love to transform an individual's experience of the world. Whether it is raining or the sun is shining, the singer sees the day as fine when she meets her beloved. The physical act of kissing her beloved causes a physical reaction in her, where the pounding in her heart becomes the ocean's roar and a thousand drums. The chorus of the song ("Day in day out") serves as a reminder that these feelings are persistent and unchanging, and that they represent a deep and enduring love.

Musicianship at such a high level. The same song done amazingly in 2 completely separate interpretations. My heart is happy

You can tell from these clips, that Judy always got a genuine kick of appreciation from the talent of her peers. In spite of her immense talent, Judy was no snob or diva. She was a very loving soul. RIP Lovely Ladies.🌈

She always held her guests' hands or embraced them when she sang with them on her show. I once read that the CBS executives thought it was too clingy and wanted her to stop being so touchy-feely with her guests. But I think Judy was just a warm and giving person....and maybe she was nervous and holding their hands grounded her. So much humanity when you watch clips of Judy.

@doveskylark "CBS executives thought it was too clingy and wanted her to stop being so touchy-feely with her guests." Yes, That's been pretty well documented, but I see it as her being a very warm human being. She may have even drawn strength from it, as you indicated. That, too, is part of being human. CBS just didn't know what they had in Judy.

This is wonderful 👍 During a time of tremendous racism, Judy treated Lena as an equal, that is Love! Big Ups, for Judy 👍👍
