Embraceable You
Judy Garland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you
Embrace me, you irreplaceable you

Just one look at you
My heart grew tipsy in me
You and you alone
Bring out the Gypsy in me
I love all, the many charms about you
Above all, I want my arms about you

Don't be a naughty, baby
Come to papa, come to papa, do
My sweet embraceable you

I love all, the many charms about you
Above all, I want my arms about you

Don't be a naughty, baby

Come to papa, come to papa, do
My sweet embraceable you

Overall Meaning

In the classic jazz standard "Embraceable You," Judy Garland croons about the irresistibility of a lover's embrace. The song is filled with romantic longing and desire, as Garland calls out to her "irreplaceable" lover with heartfelt lyrics like "just one look at you, my heart grew tipsy in me." The singer compares her beloved to a gypsy, suggesting that he or she brings out her wild and passionate side.

At its core, "Embraceable You" is a song about the transformative power of love, and how it can make even the most jaded and guarded hearts open up and embrace vulnerability. Garland's delivery is gentle and tender, but also filled with a sense of urgency, as if she can't wait another minute to hold her lover close. The song is a classic example of the American Songbook tradition, blending pop, jazz, and blues influences to create a timeless sound that continues to captivate audiences today.

I first heard this song on the movie "Catch Me If You Can" and fell in love with it .... Such a romantic old classic song . I love it !

@ripeado

There was a lifetime of sadness in her voice even at such a young age. Her aural melancholy could infuse an otherwise light ditty like this with a whole new emotional dimension. (4/18/18)

FINALLY. Someone who uploaded the full version! I mean, her voice is absolutely stunning, and so gorgeous...she's gorgeous! I know all of this was way before my time, but I honestly don't care. I am a fan of classical music like this... <3 Thank you very for uploading this! It is absolutely beautiful!! It's going into my Music Playlist now... ;3

Thank you for the embraceable masterpiece by Judy. The Girl crazy version so to speak was even more approachable for dancers... and was recorded during the same Decca studio session a month earlier than Have yourself a merry little Christmas for Meet me in St Louis movie. The rest is history.... Nobody ever proved to have been so classy, talented, charming and humanly multifaceted than Judy the Queen was. Absolute perfection... She must have been sent from above... I mean somewhere from over the rainbow where she is now of course with Mickey and Gene Kelly having a ball !!!!!!!

Thank you sooo much for posting this. Absolutely incredible. Judy Garland was one of the greatest talents the world has ever seen and will always live in my heart and I certainly hope in the hearts of all people, untouched by time.

She was the greatest talent ever. There was nothing she couldn't do. ACT-COMEDY OR DRAMA, SING-JAZZ, SWING, BLUES, CONTEMPORARY, PATRIOTIC, RELIGIOUS, AND OF ALL THINGS, ROCK AND ROLL. IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD HER VERSION OF
"THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER" THAT SHE SANG IN HER NIGHT CLUB ACT, THEN BRING IT UP ON YOUR COMPUTER. IT'S A GREAT VERSION, AND THE AUDIENCE LOVED IT. Judy was the absolute best ever, bar none. 51.years after her death and her fan base is still growing. She will be the very best for eternity.
