After appearing in Vaudeville theater with her sisters, Judy was signed to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a teenager. There she made more than two dozen films, including nine with Mickey Rooney, and the film with which she would be most identified, "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). After 15 years, Judy was released from the studio but gained renewed success through record-breaking concert appearances, including a critically acclaimed Carnegie Hall concert, a well-regarded but short-lived television series, and a return to film acting beginning with "A Star Is Born" (1954).
Despite her professional triumphs, Judy battled personal problems throughout her life. Insecure about her appearance, her feelings were compounded by film executives who told her she was unattractive and overweight. Plied with drugs to control her weight and increase her productivity, Garland endured a decades-long struggle with addiction. Garland was plagued by financial instability, often owing hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes, and her first four of five marriages ended in divorce. She attempted suicide on a number of occasions. Garland died of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 47, leaving children Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft.
Legacy
Judy Garland's legacy as a performer and a personality has endured long after her death. The American Film Institute named Garland eighth among the "Greatest Female Stars of All Time". She has been the subject of over two dozen biographies since her death, including the well-received "Me and My Shadows: A Family Memoir" by her daughter, Lorna Luft. Luft's memoir was later adapted into the multiple award-winning television mini-series, "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows", which won Emmy Awards for two actresses portraying Garland (Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis).
Garland was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. Several of her recordings have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. These include "Over the Rainbow," which was ranked as the number one movie song of all time in the American Film Institute's "100 Years...100 Songs" list. Four more Garland songs are featured on the list: "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (#76), "Get Happy" (#61), "The Trolley Song" (#26), and "The Man That Got Away" (#11).
Judy Garland has twice been honored on U.S. postage stamps, in 1989 (as Dorothy) and again in 2006 (as Vicki Lester from A Star Is Born).
I Cried For You

Now it's your turn to cry over me
Every road has a turning
That's one thing you're learning.
I cried for you
What a fool I used to be
But I'll find two eyes just a little bit bluer,
I'll find a heart just a little bit truer.
Now it's your turn to cry over me.
I know I'm no glamour girl like Baby - like her.
But maybe someday you'll realize that glamour isn't the only thing in this world.
If your show's a flop you'll find you can't eat glamour for breakfast.
Anyway, I might be pretty good-looking myself when I grow out of this ugly-duckling stage.
And you're no Clark Gable yourself.
But that's all right.
Don't worry about me, I'll recover.
Time is a great healer.
But in the future if we should meet again at the opera or at a ball, and
I'm dazzling in my diamonds and pearls and ermine wraps,
And surrounded by lords and dukes and princes, you'll probably be sorry.
And you'll probably realize that life is just an idiot's delight.
And as I speed through the night into the abyss of oblivion,
I can only say thanks - thanks for the memory.
I'll find two eyes just a little bit bluer,
I'll find a heart just a little bit truer.
I cried for you
Now it's your turn to cry over me.
The song "I Cried For You" was first recorded by jazz musician Benny Carter in 1932, but it became popular when Judy Garland recorded it in 1943 for the film "Presenting Lily Mars." The lyrics describe a person who has realized the error of their ways in a relationship and now expects the other person to feel the same pain they had previously caused. The singer says that they were a fool to think that the other person was worth their tears because now they realize that they can find someone who is even better.
The first verse "I cried for you, now it's your turn to cry over me" sets the tone for the song. It is a warning to the other person to expect their own pain and to understand what goes around comes around. The second verse expresses the singer's desire to find someone better than the one they were previously with, indicating that they have moved on from that relationship. The line "Every road has a turning, that's one thing you're learning" suggests that the other person is also learning from their mistakes in the relationship.
The end of the song suggests that the singer has let go of their pain and moved on to a better life, with the hope of finding someone who is a better fit for them. The singer refers to themselves as an "ugly duckling" who will eventually become a "swan," indicating that they have a positive self-image and are confident in their ability to find happiness.
Overall, "I Cried For You" is a song of strength and empowerment, encouraging the listener to let go of past hurts and to move forward to a brighter future.
