Holter, a Los Angeles native, grew up in a musical family. Her father plays guitar and once performed with Pete Seeger. Her mother, Carole Shammas, is a prominent academic and currently holds the John R. Hubbard Chair in History at the University of Southern California. Besides playing and recording music, Holter tutors students and works with a nonprofit organization for teenagers in South Central Los Angeles. After graduating from CalArts, where she studied composition, Holter contributed songs to multiple compilation albums in 2008. She performed in the LA Road Concert with the Open Academy Youth Orchestra on Washington Boulevard in 2009. The following year she began playing with Linda Perhacs' band. In 2010, she released a CD-R titled Celebration and a collection of live recordings.
Her debut studio album, Tragedy, was released in August 2011 on Leaving Records. Inspired by Euripides' Greek play Hippolytus, the album received generally favorable reviews and was named one of NPR's "Best Outer Sound Albums Of 2011".
Holter released a second album, Ekstasis, in March 2012 on the RVNG label. The album drew comparisons to works by such artists as Laurie Anderson, Julianna Barwick, Kate Bush, Joanna Newsom, Grouper, and Stereolab, and received many positive reviews. Holter spent three years making the album, whose title comes from the Greek word meaning "outside of oneself." The music video for album track "Moni Mon Amie", directed by Yelena Zhelezov, was also released in March.
In addition to collaborating with other California-based musicians like Nite Jewel (Ramona Gonzalez), Holter recently released her third album, Loud City Song. Unlike her first two albums, which were recorded mostly alone in her bedroom, Holter recorded Loud City Song with an ensemble of musicians
Feel You

There are so many days of rain
In Mexico City
A good reason to go
You know I love to run away from sun
Is it time to dance?
I'll fall you know I like to fall
The rush hour car
Stares and
The memory of your piano
Can I feel you? Are you
Mythological?
Figures pass so quickly
That I realize my
Eyes know very well
It's impossible to see
Who I'm waiting for
In my raincoat
The time change worked well
I had a good excuse for being late
But I pushed open the door
The room was empty all the people gone
When the cab pulled up
I laughed, I forgot where I was going
There I stood mystified
I could give no reason for my frozen stare
Am I heading toward you?
It's a hot day
Can I feel you? Are you
Mythological?
Figures pass so quickly
That I realize my
Eyes know very well
It's impossible to see
Who I'm waiting for
In my raincoat
All these perfumes
In this parking lot
Thousands of people pass through
On the festival day
Playing their saxophones
I see a flashing light
I'm blinded by the possibility
The lyrics of "Feel You" by Julia Holter captures the feeling of uncertainty, curiosity, and longing for someone or something that might not exist, represented by the mythical or mystical aspects of the song. The opening lines set the scene in Mexico City, a place with a lot of rainy days, which the singer considers as a reason to escape from the sun. The line "Is it time to dance?" could be an invitation or a rhetorical question, followed by the confession that falling is something she enjoys.
The rush hour car and the memory of the piano are powerful imagery that suggests the complexity of the emotions the singer is experiencing. Then comes the question, "Can I feel you? Are you mythological?" which could be interpreted in different ways. It could be a question of desire, of whether the person she longs for is real or imaginary, or a reference to something larger like the myth of love. The next lines suggest a feeling of waiting, uncertainty, and frustration that comes with it.
The song continues to mix the mundane ("All these perfumes / In this parking lot") with the magical ("I'm blinded by the possibility"), creating a dreamlike atmosphere that leaves the listener with a sense of longing, wonder, and confusion. Overall, "Feel You" is a song about the human need for connection, the transcendental nature of desire, and the mysteries of love and life.

this is such a lovely song. I found it because someone I used to be very much in love with liked it. Listening to it made me fall even more for him and it still brings back some nice feelings from that time. I haven’t spoken to him in years, hope he’s doing okay. ❤️

I love this for a few reasons. Unconventional instrumentation, interesting harmonic rhythm, syncopated lyrical patterns, and such a brilliantly beautiful chorus section
