Doiron started playing guitar (later switching to bass) in Eric's Trip at age 18, having joined the band under the insistence of her then-boyfriend, Rick White, also of Eric's Trip. Shortly before the band's break-up in 1996, she released a solo album under the name Broken Girl, which followed two previous 7" EPs under that name. All of her subsequent material, however, has been released under her own name.
In 1999, Doiron recorded an album with the Ottawa band Wooden Stars, the first time she had worked with a band since the end of Eric's Trip. She was honoured with a Juno Award for Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars in March of 2000. She has also appeared as a guest musician on albums by The Tragically Hip, Gordon Downie and Herman Düne, and has also released a split record co-credited to the alternative country band Okkervil River.
Although most of her solo material has been written and performed in English, she has also released an album of French language material, Désormais.
Apart from her musical career, Doiron is an avid photographer, having published a book of her photographs entitled The Longest Winter with words by Ottawa writer Ian Roy. She often does her own promotional photos and cover artwork along with her husband, painter Jon Claytor.

Moi aussi je n'aime pas ce bruit
Qu'est-ce que c'est ce charmant cœur
Qui me prendrait par la main?
Qu'est-ce que c'est ce charmant cœur
Qui me ferait sentir bien?
Qu'est-ce que c'est ce charmant cœur
Qu'est-ce que c'est ce charmant cœur
Qui me ferait sentir bien?
Et je me demande, pourquoi tu n'es pas là?
Et je me demande
Si le jour voudra me prendre et si tu m'aimeras
Si le jour viendra m'attendre
Et si toujours tu m'aimeras
Encore
Encore
Encore
Encore
Ceci changera tout
The lyrics in Julie Doiron's song "Ce Charmant Coeur" capture a sense of wistful longing and questioning about the nature of love. The repetitive lines "Moi aussi je n'aime pas ce bruit" ("I don't like that noise either") add to the dreamy, contemplative tone of the song, as if the singer is lost in thought and is seeking solace from a familiar presence. The chorus poses several questions about a "charming heart" that could take the singer's hand, make them feel good, and look at them constantly. These questions reflect a desire for connection and validation, an openness to the possibility of finding someone who could provide these things.
The last stanza of the song adds a sense of urgency and uncertainty to the singer's thoughts, as they wonder why the person they're addressing isn't there and whether or not they will love them in the future. The repetition of the word "encore" ("again") at the end of each line suggests a hope that these feelings will continue, but also a fear that they might not. The final line, "Ceci changera tout" ("This will change everything"), is ambivalent in its meaning - it could suggest a fear of the consequences of being vulnerable and opening up to love, or it could signal a readiness to embrace the unpredictability of life and love.
