@vasudean This is one of my favorite ongoing themes of the game. As it unfolded I realized that Kyros's decrees actually mostly ruined what made each of the respective lands the most useful. The population of the place known for its soldiers and war machine was destroyed. Now useless. The farmland of the, well, famous farmland was destroyed. Now useless, probably forever. The archive with one of the best depositories of knowledge in the known world, now wreathed in flames with its precious knowledge all but destroyed (or secreted away, maybe, depending on choices).

Kyros's very touch defiles the lands, and every edict ruins that which it touches. The only places in the Tiers worth colonizing were the two places that happened not to have edicts cast on them- Vendrien's Well and Lethian's Crossing.

Down with Kyros!

What makes best RPG best? Character writing and overall atmosphere. Tyranny excels in both. For example high bugget "RPG" like Skyrim has not that feeling.

Skyrim's atmosphere is incredible, but the writing doesn't stack up to Obsidian's. Writing/dialogue was always Obsidian's greatest strength going back to the Fallout days, PoE etc.

Bethesda's greatest strength was always atmosphere and environmental storytelling.

Two different approaches, two great games, loved playing both.

Yaume Lepire I'm pretty sure their Archon status is what deforms them, not Kyros her/him/itself. Also, you should realise that the game is set in the late bronze age, or rather a fantasy equivalent, you can't really expect the laws to be progressive, and the Tiers are far from progressive themselves. Kyros was also fairly kind to those whom submited peacefully. I also found challenging Kyros to be a silly endeavor, considering Kyros' total empire is at least 20 times the size of the Tiers if the map is anything to go on, and that me resisting with the Tiers alone was a sure way to end the lives of all Tiersfolk as well as my own.

Kay Givs, Interesting... I don't like Kyros, her laws are discriminatory at best, and way too rigid, and her treatment of conquered people is cruel, if not sadistic. She turned respectable men and women, like Sirin, Graven Ashe, Nerat (he was simply a young noble before his endoctrination by Kyros made him denounce his own parents of a minor crime and lash them on the public place himself; then Kyros made sure he became a sadistic madman) and Tunon into twisted versions of their former selves. But at the end of the day, it's just a game, and it's really fun! Regardless, the YouTuber Noah Caldwell-Gervais made a very interesting video about the philosophy of the game. It's called "Tyranny and the language of Power". It's a bit long, but it's really awesome and reflects what I believe really well. Here's a link if you want to watch it:

I just liked Kyros and wanted to integrate the Tiers into the empire. My whole playthrough was towards that goal, and it would have been weird to attack Kyros at the very end. I enjoyed killing nerat and graven ashe because I saw them both as jeopardizing to the integration.

Eb is my favorite as she goes against most female tropes. She is like an amazon and she kicks ass in a fight. I killed her on my first playthrough though because hail kyros.

Sue me, I'm in the minority. That just happens to be the kind of character I usually play in most RPGs - albeit with some modifications like exceptions to the importance of honor, like bloody vengeance for example. Well... that and a nearly bipolar character akin to an Ulfhéđinn or a Berserkr.

Sirin is my favorite character among the companions, seconded by Verse, though I have an unusual attachment to Barik. I have a soft spot for immovable walls of iron that hold duty and honor above all else.

DeHerg, True, but having Eb and Lantry in your party gives you their on-the-spot reactions and interactions with NPC's. They often interact with each other in those, which is... "fun". Also, thank you for the advice about Sirin... I'll take it to heart.

Age of Decadence was good, but Tyranny draws me in better. AOD definitely does “evil” a lot better though. Half the time you’re outright rewarded for being a douche and you don’t realize the consequences of some of your actions until the end of the game. Also, I like how much more mysterious the AOD world is, like if you don’t play a high lore character, you genuinely miss out on a good portion of the game.

bakeojiisan you forget that in the olden days people can be evil just for the sake of being evil and because they want to assert dominance over the other. There are many psychopaths that love killing and say that it brings them a rush and yet they can be functioning members of society (whether or not it's faked is completely up for interpretation because they feel emotion differently from normal people and most are highly intelligent.

As for the setting not requiring it, well you have a overlord that rules through fear and the only way for you to survive is if you die or join in by killing others. Sure you could say that the scarlet chorus is flawed because while some people do enjoy killing (think of it as hunting for them) most others should have the disposition of "it was kill or be killed" (become a killer or die at the hands of one), because most of how they recruit for the scarlet chorus is by conquering villages and lands and providing a twisted form of "refuge/rebirth" by joining the chorus and most likely having to kill one of your own as a right of passage.

In any case I would like to know what other RPG of this kind has better writing in your opinion. If you ask me, I feel that having played the start of tyranny and pillars, tyranny does a much better job of keeping you engaged and keeps things interesting whereas pillars feels like it has a slow start. However while tyranny does have its writing flaws as well as does pillars, it doesn't mean that it's as abysmal as you claim it to be.

Seems like we share a common taste in books. Those were my initial thoughts aswell, Voices of Nerath = Soulcatcher and the Scarlet Chorus....well to be honest they could match several factions in the malazan Books, first being the pannion seekers bitches, second a bit of the seven nation rebellion armies after book 4 and so on
