He appeared in "Josh of India" song for the support of Indian Cricket Team during Cricket World Cup 1999. Following this,he released an album called 'Pal', the title song of which struck a chord with listeners. Another song titled "Yaaron" from the same album was also popular.
His first song for a Bollywood flick was "Chhod Aaye Hum" (Maachis). But it was the song "Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil", from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that brought him into limelight.

Mujhko bhi hai pata
Ho raha hai judaa
Dono ka raasta
Dur jaake bhi mujhse tum meri yaadon main rehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Mujhko bhi hai pata
Ho raha hai judaa
Dono ka raasta
Dur jaake bhi mujhse tum meri yaadon main rehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Jitni thi khushiyaa
Sab kho chuki hai
Bas ek gham hai ki jaata nahi
Samjha ke dekha behla ke dekha
Dil hai ki chain isko aata nahi
Aarzoo hai ki hai angarai
Aag hai kab aankhon se behna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Rut aa rahi hai Rut jaa rahi hai
Dard ka mausam badla nahi
Rang yeh halka itna hai gehra
Sadiyon main hoga halka nahi
Halka nahi
Kaun jaane kya hona hai
Hum ko hai ab kya kya sehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Tum ko bhi hai khabar
Mujhko bhi hai pata
Ho raha hai judaa
Dono ka raasta
Dur jaake bhi mujhse tum meri yaadon main rehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Kabhi alvida na kehna
The lyrics of "Alvida" by K.K. talk about two individuals who are separating and their paths are diverging. The song emphasizes on the importance of holding on to memories and not saying goodbye forever. The first two lines of the song, "Tum ko bhi hai khabar, mujhko bhi hai pata" is the acknowledgment between the two sides that they both understand what's happening between them. They both know that they are separating and the situation is reflective in their thoughts.
The chorus, "Kabhi alvida na kehna" is repeated in the song which means never say goodbye. It's like a promise from one person to another that the memories of the past should be cherished and not forgotten, even in separation. The second stanza of the song talks about how the happiness they once shared has left and only sorrow overcomes them, and the pain of separation is not an easy one to deal with. The stanza also touches upon the desire to ease the pain, but it seems impossible to do so as nothing can alleviate the suffering they are experiencing.
The last stanza is a note of uncertainty for the future. The present is already filled with desolation, and the future is unclear. The lyrics speculate about the unknown, and the two individuals have no idea what is expected of them, but they promise never to say goodbye. Finally, the song concludes with the chorus, repeating the idea that even though they might separate, they will always remember their memories together.

Even after going far away, stay in my memories
Kabhi alvida na kehna
Never say goodbye
Jitni thi khushiyaa
All the happiness that was there

Has been lost
Bas ek gham hai ki jaata nahi

Samjha ke dekha behla ke dekha
I have tried to understand and console myself
Dil hai ki chain isko aata nahi
But my heart is restless, it finds no peace
Aarzoo hai ki hai angarai
I have a desire to set everything on fire
Aag hai kab aankhon se behna
When will the fire flow from my eyes
Rut aa rahi hai Rut jaa rahi hai
The season is coming, the season is going
Dard ka mausam badla nahi
The season of pain never changes
Rang yeh halka itna hai gehra
