Krishnakumar Kunnath was brought up in New Delhi. A graduate of Delhi University, he waited at tables for 6 months before he got his break, singing in a jingle for a commercial. He appeared in "Josh of India" song for the support of Indian Cricket Team during Cricket World Cup 1999. Following this,he released an album called 'Pal', the title song of which struck a chord with listeners. Another song titled "Yaaron" from the same album was also popular.
His first song for a Bollywood flick was "Chhod Aaye Hum" (Maachis). But it was the song "Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil", from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that brought him into limelight.

His distinctive voice, which seems to get even clearer with the increase in pitch, and his style of rendition are his biggest assets. He created a rage in tamil with the song "Appadi Podu ". Dheeme dheeme gin gin ke
Dhundo humein, hum hain kahaan?
Ho bhoole se fasaane hain
Zameen se begaane hain
Dekho huey hum to hawaa
Dil ke kinare, khwaabon ke neeche
Main laapata aa aa… tu laapata…
Hosh o hawaas hai laapata
[Latino Music]
Haan ye zidd hai meri
Tujhko hi sochenge ab hum
Roshni ye teri khwaabon mein rakhenge band hum
Haan subaha kab soyi? taare kab jaage?
Hum bhoole hain ki kab kya huaa
Main laapata aa aa… tu laapata…
Hosh o hawaas hai laapata
[Latino Music]
O O…
Le rahe thhe saansein
Zinda nahi the kabhi hum
Dil ye tujhko de ke
Dhadkan se waaqif huey hum
Haa tujh mein hi gum hain
Tujh mein hi khoye
Ab dar se tere jaana kahaan?
Main laapata aa… tu laapata…
Hosh o hawaas hai laapata
The lyrics of K.K.'s song "Laapata" is a reflection of a person's search for themselves. The song starts with the lines "Aankhon ko yun band karke dheeme dheeme gin gin ke dhundo humein, hum hain kahaan?" which means that the singer has closed their eyes and is trying to find themselves slowly. They are lost in their thoughts and are wondering, "Where are we?" as if they have been transported to a different world. The following lines "Ho bhoole se fasaane hain Zameen se begaane hain Dekho huey hum to hawaa" imply that they are caught up in a forgotten dream, and they feel disconnected from the world around them. They appear to be floating in the air, like the wind, without any direction or purpose.
The next lines "Dil ke kinare, khwaabon ke neeche Hai khoya khoya apna jahaan Main laapata aa aa… tu laapata… Hosh o hawaas hai laapata" further emphasize that the singer is trying to find themselves in their dreams, which they have lost somewhere deep within themselves. The opening sentence of the chorus "Haan ye zidd hai meri Tujhko hi sochenge ab hum" suggests that they have made up their mind only to think about the person who they are lost in. The lyrics speak of the person who has disappeared and only their thoughts and the light in their dreams can be seen. The song continues "Roshni ye teri khwaabon mein rakhenge band hum Haan subaha kab soyi? taare kab jaage? Hum bhoole hain ki kab kya huaa Main laapata aa aa… tu laapata… Hosh o hawaas hai laapata" which means that the person has settled themselves in the light of that person's dreams, and they have forgotten what happened when, and what was the time of night and day.

Aankhon ko yun band karke
Closing my eyes like this
Dheeme dheeme gin gin ke
Slowly, counting each breath
Dhundo humein, hum hain kahaan?
Looking for ourselves, where are we?
Ho bhoole se fasaane hain
Lost in forgotten stories
Zameen se begaane hain
Estranged from the earth
Dekho huey hum to hawaa
See, now we've become the wind
Dil ke kinare, khwaabon ke neeche
On the shores of my heart, beneath my dreams
Hai khoya khoya apna jahaan
My lost world
Main laapata aa aa… tu laapata…
I'm lost, and so are you
Hosh o hawaas hai laapata
Lost in consciousness and awareness
Haan ye zidd hai meri
Yes, this is my stubbornness
Tujhko hi sochenge ab hum
Now, I'll only think of you
Roshni ye teri khwaabon mein rakhenge band hum
I'll stay imprisoned in the light of your dreams
Haan subaha kab soyi? taare kab jaage?
Did morning ever sleep? Did the stars ever awaken?
Hum bhoole hain ki kab kya huaa
We've forgotten when what happened
O O…
Le rahe thhe saansein
Breathing in and out
Zinda nahi the kabhi hum
We were never really alive
Dil ye tujhko de ke
Having given you my heart
Dhadkan se waaqif huey hum
I became aware through my heartbeat
Haa tujh mein hi gum hain
Yes, I'm lost in you
Tujh mein hi khoye
Lost in you
Ab dar se tere jaana kahaan?
Now, I'm afraid to leave you. Where should I go?
Main laapata aa… tu laapata…
I'm lost, and so are you
Hosh o hawaas hai laapata
Lost in consciousness and awareness
