She only performed in two operas, Britten’s ‘The Rape of Lucretia’ (1946) and Gluck’s ‘Orfeo ed Eudridice’ (1947). Her rising star as a highly characteristic alto was cut short when she died at only 41; from breast cancer. Luckily, she managed to do many recordings in her too brief career, among the most treasured are Mahler’s ‘Das Lied von der Erde’ and ‘Kindertotenlieder’.

I will tell you how I discovered Kathleen Ferrier. It was the French film director Claude Chabrol fault! I was about 18 years old when I saw his film "Que la bête meure" and heard a fantastic singer who sang one of Brahms´ Vier ernste Gesänge during the credits of the film and then I fell in love with this voice. I had to know who the singer was and I found out. I bought all her Long Playing records on Decca.

I was a KF fan before i saw Chabrol's deeply philosophical film and i thought it a remarkable compliment to the power of her interpretation as in many ways being most appropriate to match the mood of this film , the main character of which is an unredeemable amoral person. I often wonder just how he came to listen to her singing and decide to use it in his film. I think it must have impressed him very deeply.

What a talent and taken from us far too soon.

Fantastico videooo!!!

The one I was most fond of was Orfeo ed Euridice from the Glyndebourne Festival with maestro Fritz Stiedry. But I was disappointed that it did not sound good on CD when it came out. Perhaps I will buy the 14 CD-box that just have arrived and hope that the sound is better on these. I will love her singing as long as I live and pity that many of her recordings are so poorly done. Thats all folks! Hi
