What a Time to Be Alive
Kaye Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What a fucking time to be alive
What a fucking time to watch the world burn while inside
I’m laughing to the gallows
Nothing else to do but cry
What a fucking time to be alive

Imagining a leader who didn’t hate
Imagining a leader who cared for people over ratings
Who didn’t kick when folks were down just to put them in their place
Imagining a leader who didn’t hate

Tell your poor that they deserve to die
And if she calls you out, then she’s a bitch for stepping out of line
Cuz you know it’s a sign of weakness to apologize
What a fucking time to be alive

Try to punish us cuz someone punished you
Try to fix the hole inside with money, tanks and troops
i’m laughing to the gallows, nothing else to do but cry

But when you’re on your own deathbed
In your golden cell on 5th ave
And your kids don’t care cuz they never did
And your base can’t cheer you out of it
With no little people left to hit
And no tricks left to try

Millions will still cry
What a fucking time to be alive

Overall Meaning

In Kaye's song, "What a Time to Be Alive," the singer describes the bleakness of the world around him. He opens the song with the line "What a fucking time to be alive" and repeats it throughout the song. He is acutely aware of the chaos and destruction in the world and is unable to ignore the feelings of anger, confusion, and despair that are constantly swirling around him.

In the second stanza, the singer imagines a world where leaders are not driven only by self-interest and ratings. He yearns for a leader who cares about the people they are meant to lead and who does not constantly kick them when they are already down. It's the kind of leadership he wishes he could see within the current world he lives in.

The final stanza of the song is a harsh critique of people who have power and influence but misuse it. The suggestion is that they will find themselves alone in the end with no one left to turn to. The line "With no little people left to hit, and no tricks left to try" suggests that people who have gained power and abused it will eventually ruin all their tactics to maintain their power. He emphasizes that, at the end of their life, no amount of power, no amount of money, and no number of supporters will be able to save them from the harsh realities of their own mortality.
