honestly
Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Could you love somebody like that?
Could you attract someone like that?
Could you go where people can't see someone like me
Could you do that?

Would you face me
Make me listen to the truth even if it breaks me
You can judge me, love me
If you're hating me
Do it honestly

All I see are Stepford-like lives
Needles and knives
Beautiful lies
Bringing out the green in your eyes
A perfect disguise for envy and pride

Face me
Make me listen to the truth,
Even if it breaks me
You can judge me, love me

If you're hating me
do it honestly

You can tell me
You can tell me
You can tell me
You can tell me
You can tell me

Face me
Make me listen to the truth,
Even if it breaks me
You can judge me, love me
If you're hating me

Would you face me
Make me listen to the truth even if it breaks me
Judge me, love me
If you're hating me
Do it honestly

You can tell me
You can tell me
You can tell me
You can tell me

Do it honestly

You can tell me
You can tell me

You can tell me
You can tell me

Overall Meaning

In Kelly Clarkson's song Honestly, she is asking her love interest if they could truly accept her and love her without any false pretenses. She questions if this person could love someone like her, who may not fit into society's expectations of what is deemed attractive or acceptable. She asks if they could go to places where people may judge her, but her love interest might not be ashamed to be seen with her.

She then speaks about the facade of society - these "Stepford-like lives" that people lead, which are nothing but a perfect disguise for envy and pride. She implores her love interest to be brave enough to face her and tell her the truth, even if it may break her. She calls for honesty from this person, be it love or hate, urging them to be truthful with her.

Overall, the song speaks to the universal desire we all have to be accepted for who we are and loved without any pretenses. It is a plea for genuine connections and relationships, free from societal pressures and expectations.

one of her most underrated song

Kelly Clarkson has never followed trends in mainstream music. To prove the point, almost all of her songs are pop rock mix. She didn't go pop punk in a full limit just like other artists (Avril Lavigne, Paramore, etc.) did, but she borrowed certain elements from it and blended them with other elements from such other genres as alternative, indie, pop, country. That's the perfect crossover, and that's why Kelly Clarkson's music is outstanding in its own right!!!!!!! She's such a legend.
