rock hudson
Kelly Clarkson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You were my Rock Hudson
It was real but it wasn't
No one ever saw it comin'
I was never what you want, and
Like a real-life movie
Didn't think it'd happen to me
Guess it didn't, you just fooled me
Who knew love was so confusin'

Happiness doesn't mean
Smilin' when it's your scene
You said we were doin' fine as you set the whole place on fire
I tried everything
Turns out we can't compete
Oh, reality is never quite as good as the dream

No, I won't dance anymore
No, I won't put on a show
And you can blame it on me
I don't care what they think
No, I won't let you control
No, I won't be what you want
And you can blame it on me
I don't care what you think

From the moment I saw you
I had never felt I could choose
It was always gonna be you
Even when they told me not to
You were all I wanted
But now you're gone and
What's good's a promise
If you're never really honest?

No, I won't dance anymore
No, I won't put on a show
And you can blame it on me
I don't care what they think
No, I won't let you control
No, I won't be what you want
And you can blame it on me
I don't care what you think

By the way, piece by piece
I found out my hero's me
By the way, piece by piece
I found out my hero's me

Happiness doesn't mean
Smilin' when it's your scene
You made sure to keep me small enough to keep me in between
Should I stay? Should I leave?
Could I ever compete
With the bar you set so high that you could never even reach?

No, I won't dance anymore
No, I won't put on a show
And you can blame it on me (you can blame it on me)
I don't care what they think (I don't care what they think)
No, I won't let you control
No, I won't be what you want
And you can blame it on me (you can blame it on me)
I don't care what you think (I don't care what you think)

By the way, piece by piece
I found out my hero's me

By the way, piece by piece
I found out my hero's me

Overall Meaning

In "Rock Hudson," Kelly Clarkson reflects on a failed relationship where she felt deceived and controlled. The lyrics suggest that she saw the relationship as a real-life movie, where she never expected to be fooled or experience such confusion in love. The reference to Rock Hudson, an iconic actor known for his roles in romantic movies, implies that she idealized the relationship and hoped for a fairytale ending.

Clarkson portrays the realization that happiness doesn't always align with societal norms or expectations. She rejects putting on a show and dancing to please others, emphasizing her newfound independence and refusal to conform. The line "By the way, piece by piece, I found out my hero's me" suggests that she has discovered her own strength and self-worth, realizing that she doesn't need someone else to be her hero or define her.

Throughout the song, Clarkson challenges the controlling nature of her former partner, highlighting her defiance and determination to no longer be what he wants her to be. The lyrics express a sense of liberation and a refusal to let others manipulate or define her self-worth. Ultimately, she takes ownership of her own happiness and acknowledges that her hero resides within herself.

I thought she sang , "ride away, piece by piece," keeping that cowboy vibe, but I'm notorious for messing up lyrics. :) I'm I visioning a shattering marionette cowboy riding into the distance. Lol

She sounds better live than almost anyone else would in the studio.

Along with Adele!

@Jose Jimenezdon’t get me wrong. I LOVE Adele but not all her live performances are all that great. She sounds pretty nasal and off key a lot of the times live. But she can get away with it because you know, she is Adele and she’ll move you with her performance
