Our pain and traumatic experiences have led us to isolate ourselves from the world.

Just because we check the guns at the door
Don't assume that we aren't capable of inflicting harm. We're taking preventative measures, but it doesn't change who we are.

Doesn't mean our brains will change from hand grenades
We're still volatile individuals and checking weapons at the door doesn't change that.

You're loving on the psychopath sitting next to you
The people around you may have dangerous tendencies and may cause you harm if you let your guard down.

You're loving on the murderer sitting next to you
Those around you may have extreme pasts and have already caused harm to others. Be cautious.

You'll think, "How'd I get here, sitting next to you?"
It's easy to find yourself in situations you didn't anticipate. Be prepared for anything.

But after all I've said, please don't forget
Despite the warnings and potential danger, please remember to treat us with kindness and empathy.

We don't deal with outsiders very well
We're distrustful of those we don't know, and may not welcome you with open arms.

They say newcomers have a certain smell
We're quick to pick up on nuances and may be suspicious of those we don't recognize.

You have trust issues, not to mention
We have significant trust issues due to our past experiences, making it hard to forge new relationships.

They say they can smell your intentions
We're especially adept at identifying others' motives and may be guarded if we sense anything insincere.

You'll have some weird people sitting next to you
Be prepared for a diverse group of individuals who may have unconventional perspectives or behaviors.

Why'd you come? You knew you should have stayed
You had fair warning that this is not a safe place to be. Why did you choose to come?
